(1994) : Social support, social control, and health among the elderly In: Penny, Gillian N.; Bennett, Paul; Herbert, Mike (Hg.): Health psychology. A lifespan perspective.: Harwood, S. 191-211
Abstract: Examines how social support and social control processes affect patterns of illness and disability in later life. Epidemiological evidence is presented which shows that social integration generally results in longer life expectancy. It is argued that social relationships provide emotional support as well as constraints to behavior, effectively reducing the incidence of chronic health problems by decreasing the likelihood that unhealthy behaviors will be initiated in response to stressful circumstances. Similarly, social support and control help encourage compliance with prescribed medical treatment and daily self-care activities after the onset of chronic conditions, enabling the elderly individual to manage disability in later life. Suggestions for future research, with particular emphasis on the interaction between social support and social control processes, are also presented. zitiert von 36

Abstract: This study investigated the differential moralities of women and men and discusses their differential usefulness in familial and non-familial or professional environments. Responses to dilemma situations of 40 women and 40 men were studied and compared. The investigation explicitly confirmed that women judged moral conflicts primarily through a 'Care' style which is part of a provider/guardian morality, while men choose a judgement style of 'justice' corresponding to a morality of equity or fairness. In professional settings however both used the 'justice' style. This means that women apply a different standard in family situations than they do in professional public situations. The different female judgment styles are explained by women conforming to the existent professional male style which helps their role emancipation and public coping. Some challenging questions are discussed relative to how large a polarization of moral judgement styles is desirable relative to wom en and m en. (1994): Liebe als Passion. Zur Codierung von Intimität. Frankfurt (Main): Suhrkamp
Abstract: 1982 wurde Liebe als Passion.

In: Zeitschrift fur Volkskunde 90 (1), S. 13-36

(1994): Beyond politeness theory. ‘Face’ revisited and renewed. In: Journal of Pragmatics 21 (5), S. 451-486. DOI: 10.1016/0378-2166(94)90025-6
Abstract: After reviewing Brown and Levinson's face-saving model of politeness in light of Goffman's original discussion of face, and tracing the origin of this concept back to Chinese, the essay analyzes in detail the Chinese concept of face (that is, mianzi and lian), pointing out its interactional differences from Brown and Levinson's negative and positive face. The essay further examines an intrinsic link between face and politeness (limao) in Chinese, and draws upon studies of Japanese interaction and its underlying concept of face. The essay argues that Brown and Levinson's claim to provide a universally valid model of face is empirically inadequate; the dynamics of Chinese face call for an alternative, and more flexible framework. It is therefore suggested that a relative face orientation construct be posited to address cultural variations in notions of face and to identify two competing forces shaping our interactional behaviors: the ideal social identity and the ideal individual autonomy.. The essay finally analyzes two Chinese discourse activities-a pre-dinner invitation and a post-dinner offer-focusing on the complexity of Chinese face, and discussing its persistent, mutually shared, orientation toward an ideal social identity.

(1994): Culture, Responsibility, and Affected Ignorance, S. 291-309
Abstract: Few theorists concerned to understand human behavior would deny that the capacity to be influenced by the specific culture of a given social group is an important part of what it is to be human. As Clyde Kluckhohn argued in his "layman's introduction" to anthropology, Mirror for Man, "to be human is to be cultured. There is culture in general and then there are the specific cultures such as Russian, American, British, Hottentot, Inca. The general abstract notion serves to remind us that we cannot explain acts solely in terms of the biological properties of the people concerned, their individual past experience, and the immediate situation."' Moreover, as Kluckhohn suggests in this passage, if being human involves being cultured, there must then be a crucial connection between culture and agency. An important consequence of this connection is that much of our behavior can be intelligible only by reference to generally approved cultural practices. For example, only by reference to participation in a marriage ceremony can we coherently account for what happens when two people appear together to pronounce certain expressions of their language and exchange circular pieces of a yellow metal. Further, every culture develops intricate patterns of normative expectations about emotion, thought, and action that help to structure each person's formative experiences. The motivation of people who marry, for instance, will be partly influenced by such patterns of cultural approval. Recognizing the link between culture and agency clearly reveals that cultures powerfully shape even the most fundamental desires and purposes that influence human action

(1994): Zahlung und Achtung. Die Interpenetration von Okonomie und Moral. In: Zeitschrift fur Soziologie 23 (5), S. 388-411

(1994): Tabus in sozialen Systemen.

(1994): Social dominance orientation. A personality variable predicting social and political attitudes. In: Journal of personality and social psychology 67 (4), S. 741-763. DOI: 10.1037/0022-3514.67.4.741
Abstract: Social dominance orientation (SDO), one's degree of preference for inequality among social groups, is introduced. On the basis of social dominance theory, it is shown that (a) men are more social dominance-oriented than women, (b) high-SDO people seek hierarchy-enhancing professional roles and low-SDO people seek hierarchy-attenuating roles, (c) SDO was related to beliefs in a large number of social and political ideologies that support group-based hierarchy (e.g., meritocracy and racism) and to support for policies that have implications for intergroup relations (e.g., war, civil rights, and social programs), including new policies. SDO was distinguished from interpersonal dominance, conservatism, and authoritariansim. SDO was negatively correlated with empathy, tolerance, communality, and altruism. The ramifications of SDO in social context are discussed.

(1994): Emphatic speech style - with special focus on the prosodic signalling of heightened emotive involvement in conversation. In: Journal of Pragmatics 22 (3-4), S. 375-408. DOI: 10.1016/0378-2166(94)90116-3
Abstract: After a review of previous work on the prosody of emotional involvement, data extracts from natural conversations are analyzed in order to argue for the constitution of an 'emphatic (speech) style', which linguistic devices are used to signal heightened emotive involvement. Participants use prosodic cues, in co-occurrence with syntactic and lexical cues, to contexturalize turn-constructional units as 'emphatic'. Only realizations of prosodic categories that are marked in relation to surrounding uses of these categories have the power to contextualize units as displaying 'more-than-normal involvement'. In the appropriate context, and in co-occurrence with syntactic and lexical cues and sequential position, the context-sensitive interpretation of this involvement is 'emphasis'. Prosodic marking is used in addition to various unmarked cues that signal and constitute different activity types in conversation. Emphatic style highlights and reinforms particular conversational activities, and makes certain types of recipient responses locally relevant. In particular, switches from non-emphatic to emphatic style are used to contextualize 'peaks of involvement' or 'climaxes' in story-telling. These are shown in the paper to be 'staged' by speakers and treated by recipients as marked activities calling for displays of alignment with respect to the matter at hand. Signals of emphasis are deployable as techniques for locally organizing demonstrations of shared understanding and participant reciprocity in conversational interaction.

Abstract: At the conference, we had presentations arguing the death of philosophy, the death of man, the death of Marxism, the end of history, the end of socialism, the end of ideology and the end of humanism. The only isms of modern thinking which haven't been declared dead are those of capitalism, liberalism and feminism. In response to Johan Galtung's invitation to us to think and speak of the unspoken, we might pose the question whether capitalism or liberalism deserve the glory of survivors. Whether the “mortality” instinct of the European and …
