DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ROMAN.2018.8525843 Abstract: For a proactive and user-centered robotic assistance and communication, an assistive robot must make decisions about the level of assistance to be provided. Therefore, the robot must be aware of the preferences and the capabilities of the elderly. At the same time, relying on a sensing setup which is totally embedded in the assistive robot would increase its usability. In the framework of the RAMCIP project, a novel skills evaluation methodology has been developed to make the robot aware of the user's perceptual, cognitive and motor skills. This paper presents such a methodology and its preliminary evaluation. Based on a task analysis of the activities for which the robot provides assistance, the user's skills are given a score which is updated at different time scales based on the source of information. Highly reliable information is gathered from caregivers at a low rate by means of a graphical interface hosted by the robot. This information refers to standard medical examinations. Based on the modules for motion tracking, object and activity recognition, specific actions of ADL are selected to update motor skills score at a higher rate, which is typically twice per day. The two sources of information are then fused in a Kalman filter. Preliminary results on the illustrative example of arm precision show that the robot's sensing and cognitive capabilities suffice to obtain a state-of-the-art evaluation of the arm precision skill.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ACII.2015.7344568 Abstract: We present LISSA - Live Interactive Social Skill Assistance - a web-based system that helps people practice their conversational skills by having short conversations with a human like virtual agent and receiving real-time feedback on their nonverbal behavior. In this paper, we describe the development of an interface for these features and examine the viability of real time feedback using a Wizard of Oz prototype. We then evaluated our system using a speed-dating study design. We invited 47 undergraduate male students to interact with staff and randomly assigned them to intervention with LISSA or a self-help control group. Results suggested participants who practiced with the LISSA system were rated as significantly better in nodding when compared to a self-help control group and marginally better in eye contact and gesturing. The system usability and surveys showed that participants found the feedback provided by the system useful, unobtrusive, and easy to understand.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ROMAN.2015.7333562 Abstract: In this paper we present a system for all and sundry to create robotic applications which is characterized by adaptivity on different levels. First, users are enabled to create their own applications (e.g. play a card game with robot) by the usage of a decision making framework for robot companions. Second, within a created application the robot itself adapts its behavior via user feedback based on a decision making algorithm (e.g. teach the robot a card game based on user feedback). In dependency of the user's expertise, he or she has different possibilities of enhancing the robot's capabilities. Especially for the non-expert user a tool has been developed which provides a graphical user interface to configure applications. The usability of the tool has been evaluated with 5 participants of the age group 40+. The results show that the technical requirements to include non-experts are fulfilled by the framework but also reveal ways to improve the tool, such as the placement of the assistance mechanisms offered to the user.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/IPCC.2010.5530017 Abstract: This study addresses how advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) should communicate with drivers, focusing on the local danger warning function. To achieve high-quality assistance, the communication mode needs to be adaptive to changes in driving situation (driver's state, workload and environment). In a user study investigating different warning communication modes, drivers were required to assess the usability of each communication mode in five different driving situations. Results revealed that the driving situation significantly affected the perceived usefulness of each warning communication mode, mainly due to the use of modality. Moreover, regardless of communication mode, the local danger warning function was considered as the most useful in the low visibility situation and the least useful in the highly demanding driving situation. Findings of this study can be applied to the design of ADAS in general.

On the downside, engineering full-fledged AHCS is a non-trivial task, and convincing solutions are still lacking. Current approaches still are focused mainly on technology rather than the user perspective and fail to address usability issues. Additionally, most solutions have a narrow focus, are not context-aware, and have difficulties to integrate with other living assistance solutions. This results in reduced assistance. In this paper, we (i) motivate the application of Ambient Intelligence technology for home care systems and identify shortcomings of current solutions, (ii) outline an integrated system approach to full-fledged AHCS, and (iii) introduce the amiCA system

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1049/ic:19960650 Abstract: KIMSAC-Kiosk-based Integrated Multimedia Service Access for Citizens-is a project supported by the EU's ACTS programme. It aims to provide a flexible way for citizens to access intricate and complex information provided on public information kiosks. To provide a high degree of usability, the concept of a personal service assistant (PSA) is used in this project, and is realised through adding the agent dimension to a multimedia presentation. Although the concept of the PSA is to help the client during an interactive session with the system, that is, attempting to determine the competence of the user and so modify the interface accordingly, the authors expect more from the PSA. The characteristics which a PSA should exhibit are, to be able to (a) carry out dialogue with the client, (b) provide a tone which builds trust in the client, (c) assist the client at varying levels of interface interaction (d) give assistance when the client has problems or the presentation fails and (e) let the client take control when appropriate.
