(2019) : Cuteness as a ‘Dark Pattern’ in Home Robots: 2019 14th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI): Daegu, Korea: IEEE, S. 374-381
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/HRI.2019.8673274 Abstract: Dark patterns are a recent phenomenon in the field of interaction design, where design patterns and behavioral psychology are deployed in ways that deceive the user. However, the current corpus of dark patterns literature focuses largely on screen-based digital interactions and should be expanded to include home robots. In this paper, we apply the concept of dark patterns to the ‘cute’ aesthetic of home robots and suggest that their design constitutes a dark pattern in HRI by (1) emphasizing short-term gains over long-term decisions; (2) depriving users of some degree of conscious agency at the site of interaction; and (3) creating an affective response in the user for the purpose of collecting emotional data. This exploratory paper expands the current library of dark patterns and their application to new technological interfaces into the domain of home robotics in order to establish the grounds for an ethical design practice in HRI.

Abstract: A socially intelligent robot must be capable to extract meaningful information in real time from the social environment and react accordingly with coherent human-like behavior. Moreover, it should be able to internalize this information, to reason on it at a higher level, build its own opinions independently, and then automatically bias the decision-making according to its unique experience. In the last decades, neuroscience research highlighted the link between the evolution of such complex behavior and the evolution of a certain level of consciousness, which cannot leave out of a body that feels emotions as discriminants and prompters. In order to develop cognitive systems for social robotics with greater human-likeliness, we used an “understanding by building” approach to model and implement a well-known theory of mind in the form of an artificial intelligence, and we tested it on a sophisticated robotic platform. The name of the presented system is SEAI (Social Emotional Artificial Intelligence), a cognitive system specifically conceived for social and emotional robots. It is designed as a bio-inspired, highly modular, hybrid system with emotion modeling and high-level reasoning capabilities. It follows the deliberative/reactive paradigm where a knowledge-based expert system is aimed at dealing with the high-level symbolic reasoning, while a more conventional reactive paradigm is deputed to the low-level processing and control. The SEAI system is also enriched by a model that simulates the Damasio’s theory of consciousness and the theory of Somatic Markers. After a review of similar bio-inspired cognitive systems, we present the scientific foundations and their computational formalization at the basis of the SEAI framework. Then, a deeper technical description of the architecture is disclosed underlining the numerous parallelisms with the human cognitive system. Finally, the influence of artificial emotions and feelings, and their link with the robot’s beliefs and decisions have been tested in a physical humanoid involved in Human–Robot Interaction (HRI).

First, the definitions of terminologies are clarified. After describing neural and cognitive mechanisms of affect, I provide theories of affective effects so that researchers can apply them to their research areas and develop their own theory further. Then, the chapter focuses on introducing and comparing four different approaches to Affective Sciences in HF/HCI, including Emotional Design, Hedonomics, Kansei Engineering, and Affective Computing. After delineating advantages and disadvantages of affect induction and detection methodologies, theoretical and practical issues and future works of this domain are discussed. This short review is expected to guide HF/HCI researchers and practitioners who begin to study emotions and affect, and to facilitate communication about emotions and affect within the HF/HCI community.

Beispielsweise kann das Beobachten einer Ungerechtigkeit echte Empörung auslösen (d. h. third-party anger). Außergewöhnliche Hilfsbereitschaft dagegen kann zu Gefühlen des Bewegtseins und der Überwältigung führen (d. h. being moved). Am Beispiel dieser Emotionen beleuchtet die vorliegende Dissertation wie Moral und Emotionen zusammenhängen. Dafür wurde die Rolle von Konsequenzen und Normen für emotionale Reaktionen und damit verbundene Verhaltensweisen anhand von sechs empirischen Studien untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Gefühle des Bewegtseins das positive Pendent zu Ärger darstellen. Während Ärger durch Normverletzungen ausgelöst wird (z. B. Ungerechtigkeit oder Respektlosigkeit), werden Gefühle des Bewegtseins durch das Beobachten positiver Normabweichungen ausgelöst (z. B. ungewöhnliche Hilfsbereitschaft oder außergewöhnliche Leistung). Diese emotionalen Episoden scheinen wesentlich für ein soziales Zusammenleben zu sein, da sie mit Bestrafungsentscheidungen, politischen Wahlentscheidungen und ehrenamtlicher Arbeit verbunden waren. Wie diese Emotionen ausgelöst werden konnte wesentlich besser erklärt werden, wenn bestehende Methoden zur Erfassung von Appraisals (d. h. subjektiven Bewertungen) erweitert wurden. Zusammengenommen zeigen diese Befunde auf, wie Appraisaltheorien auf moralische Emotionen angewendet werden können und tragen dazu bei, Verbindungen zwischen moralischen Grundsätzen und Emotionen zu identifizieren. Sie weisen außerdem auf praktische Implikationen hin, wie der Auslösung von Ärger durch Medien und der Rolle von Gefühlen des Bewegtseins in Überzeugungsprozessen. Moral and immoral behavior can elicit strong emotions. For instance, people can get outraged when they witness unfair behavior (i.e., they experience third-party anger) and they can be intensely moved and overwhelmed by exceptional helpfulness (i.e., they experience feelings of being moved). Using these feelings of third-party anger and being moved as examples, this dissertation set out to clarify how morality and emotions are related. Specifically, the role of outcomes and norms for emotional reactions and behavioral consequences were investigated within six empirical studies. Results indicate that third-party anger and feelings of being moved are counterparts: whereas witnessing behavior that violates norms (e.g., unfairness or disrespect) elicits anger, witnessing behavior that surpasses norms (e.g., exceptional helpfulness or outstanding achievement) elicits feelings of being moved. These emotional episodes seem to be highly relevant for social life as they were associated with punishment decisions, voting intentions and voluntary work. Explaining the elicitation of these emotions was improved when expanding established appraisal assessment methods. Taken together, these findings provide a framework for applying appraisal research to moral emotions and contribute to identifying links between moral principles and emotions. In addition, they point to practical implications concerning anger-induction through the media and the role of being moved in persuasion processes.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1075/is.16.2.11ben Abstract: We report two experimental studies of human perceptions of robotic facial expressions while systematically varying context effects and the cultural background of subjects (n = 93). Except for Fear, East Asian and Western subjects were not significantly different in recognition rates, and, while Westerners were better at judging affect from mouth movement alone, East Asians were not any better at judging affect based on eye/brow movement alone. Moreover, context effects appeared capable of over-riding such cultural differences, most notably for Fear. The results seem to run counter to previous theories of cultural differences in facial expression based on emoticons and eye fixation patterns. We connect this to broader research in cognitive science – suggesting the findings support a dynamical systems view of social cognition as an emergent phenomenon. The results here suggest that, if we can induce appropriate context effects, it may be possible to create culture-neutral models of robots and affective interaction. DOI: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1071581915000191 Abstract: For social robots to respond to humans in an appropriate manner, they need to use apt affect displays, revealing underlying emotional intelligence. We present an artificial emotional intelligence system for robots, with both a generative and a perceptual aspect. On the generative side, we explore the expressive capabilities of an abstract, faceless, creature-like robot, with very few degrees of freedom, lacking both facial expressions and the complex humanoid design found often in emotionally expressive robots. We validate our system in a series of experiments: in one study, we find an advantage in classification for animated vs static affect expressions and advantages in valence and arousal estimation and personal preference ratings for both animated vs static and physical vs on-screen expressions. In a second experiment, we show that our parametrically generated expression variables correlate with the intended user affect perception. Combining the generative system with a perceptual component of natural language sentiment analysis, we show in a third experiment that our automatically generated affect responses cause participants to show signs of increased engagement and enjoyment compared with arbitrarily chosen comparable motion parameters.

Abstract: Recent developments in the service sector have led sociologists to suggest that customers are increasingly encouraged to work' for service organizations. This article develops the hypothesis that the clients who work in this service sector may experience an emotional dimension to their work. In support of this hypothesis, a revision of the notion of emotion work' is proposed on the basis of a study on the problematic usages of a phone interface service supplied by a telecommunications operator. The study made use of a group of genuine calls that were transcribed and coded; utterances were described objectively regarding pitch and intensity; finally, a statistical method for detecting sequential patterns was applied. The results suggest that clients respond emotionally to usability problems, and that their emotions unfold according to a recurrent sequential structure. Goffman's remedial interchange' provides the point of reference for the interpretation, which leads to the suggestion that the emotional patterns revealed are of a social origin, though not socially situated.

Abstract: Service and assistant robots operating in "real world" become more and more important for everyday life. Requirements like social intelligence, social interaction, and social behavior are of enormous importance. Researchers agree that the realization of emotions for a robot is one of the most important steps on the way towards social robots. Still, an open question in robotics is how to model emotion in a way that all its functions are realized. In this paper an emotion-based architecture is presented. The architecture supports the implementation of the five functions of emotion, namely: regulative function, selective function, expressive function, motivational function, and rating function. Scalability, perceptibility, and parameterability are also considered as design features. As basis for the proposed architecture, psychological emotion and motivation theories are used. The derived control architecture is implemented using a behavior-based approach, in order to realize a modular extensible system design. The developed architecture is tested on the humanoid robot ROMAN.

Abstract: It is anticipated that the use of assistive robots will be one of the most important service applications of robotic systems of the future. In this paper, the development of a unique noncontact socially assistive robot consisting of a humanlike demeanor is presented for utilization in hospital wards and nursing/veteran homes to study its role and impact on the well-being of patients, addressing patient's needs and its overall effect on the quality of patient care. The robot will be an embodied entity that will participate in hands-off noncontact social interaction with a patient during the convalescence, rehabilitation, or end-of-life care stage. The robot has been designed as a platform to incorporate the three design parameters of embodiment, emotion, and nonverbal communication to encourage natural human-robot interactions. Herein, we present the overall mechanical design of the socially assistive robot focusing mainly on the development of the actuation system of the face, head, and upper body. In particular, we propose the development of a unique muscle actuation mechanism for the robotic face to allow for the display of rich facial expressions during social assistive interaction scenarios. The novelty of the actuation system is in its use of the dependency of facial muscle activity to minimize the number of individual actuators required to control the robotic face.

Abstract: The 'traditional' first two dimensions in emotion research are VALENCE and AROUSAL. Normally, they are obtained by using elicited, acted data. In this paper, we use realistic, spontaneous speech data from our 'AIBO' corpus (human-robot communication, children interacting with Sony's AIBO robot). The recordings were done in a Wizard-of-Oz scenario: the children believed that AIBO obeys their commands; in fact, AIBO followed a fixed script and often disobeyed. Five labellers annotated each word as belonging to one of eleven emotion-related states; seven of these states which occurred frequently enough are dealt with in this paper. The confusion matrices of these labels were used in a Non-Metrical Multi-dimensional Scaling to display two dimensions; the first we interpret as VALENCE, the second, however, not as AROUSAL but as INTERACTION, i.e., addressing oneself (angry, joyful) or the communication partner (motherese, reprimanding). We show that it depends on the specifity of the scenario and on the subjects' conceptualizations whether this new dimension can be observed, and discuss impacts on the practice of labelling and processing emotional data. Two-dimensional solutions based on acoustic and linguistic features that were used for automatic classification of these emotional states are interpreted along the same lines.

Abstract: A dyadic methodological and statistical approach to social power is used to test the notion that an individual’s power and a partner’s power have distinct effects on the individual’s emotional experience. Two studies examined actor and partner effects of social power on emotion within dyadic interactions. Across interpersonal contexts and measures of social power, the individual’s own social power, theorized to activate behavioral approach, was associated with positive emotion (an actor effect). In contrast, being subject to a partner’s elevated social power, theorized to activate behavioral inhibition, was associated with increased negative emotion (a partner effect). The time has come when their ability to intelligently and effectively interact with us needs to match the level of technological sophistication they have already achieved, whether these robots are tools, avatars (human surrogates), partners (as in a team) or cyborg extensions (prostheses). Emotion-inspired mechanisms can improve the way autonomous robots operate in a human environment with people, and can improve the ability of these robots to effectively achieve their own goals. Such goals may be related to accomplishing tasks or satisfying motivations, and they may be achieved either autonomously or in cooperation with a person. In order to do this in a way that is natural for humans, the robot needs to be designed with a social model in mind. We illustrate this concept by describing in detail the design of Kismet, an anthropomorphic robot that interacts with a human in a social way, focusing on its facial and vocal expressions and gaze direction. Kismet’s architecture includes a cognitive system that is tightly coupled to a separate emotive system. Each is designed as interacting networks of ’specialists’ that are activated when specific conditions are met. The cognitive component is responsible for perceiving and interpreting events, and for selecting among a hierarchy of goal-achieving behaviors, in accordance with its current motivational drives. It is primarily concerned with homeostasis and ’well being.’ The emotive system implements eight basic emotions that are proposed to exist across species. It detects those internal and external events that have affective value, and motivates either task-based or communicative behavior to pursue beneficial interactions and to avoid those that are not beneficial by modulating the operation of the cognitive component.
