  • Diekmann, Andreas (2016): Spieltheorie.

Abstract: Reviews the book, Harold Garfinkel: The Creation and Development of Ethnomethodology by Dirk vom Lehn (2014). In this book, Dirk vom Lehn provides a well-judged introduction to ethnomethodology (EM) and a fitting tribute to its late, great, progenitor Harold Garfinkel. The book deals with Garfinkel’s intellectual development; personal details introduced therein are interesting and relevant. The biographical elements of the book are as much of EM as its inventor. The book is, as one would expect, very well researched. It succeeds in bringing together various works and writings of Garfinkel to tell the story of EM’s development from the ‘proto-ethnomethodological’ studies of jurors’ and coders’ practices, through to the latter directions and contributions of EM’s program and the influence of EM in a number of fields of contemporary sociological inquiry. Amplifying the research required to produce a book such as this is a care and enthusiasm in the writing that will re mind those working in the field why they were attracted to this ‘alternate, asymmetrical and incommensurate’ sociology in the first place. Abstract: Ethnography of Communication offers new analytical and interpretive possibilities for contextually sensitized, language- and communication-based ethnographic studies of management and organization. In this article we provide an introduction and overview of relevant linguistic and related fields, positioning Ethnography of Communication within the broader context of anthropology, ethnomethodology, and sociolinguistics. We describe Dell Hymes’s seminal contribution to theory and method of Ethnography of Communication (foregrounding Hymes’s signature concept of 'communicative competence') and outline what the application of an Ethnography of Communication approach in management research might entail (illustrating the application of Hymes’s SPEAKING grid). We conclude by offering an example of how the methods of Ethnography of Communication might be applied usefully to the study of organizational language, discourse, and communication.

(Hg.): APA handbook of research methods in psychology, Vol 2: Research designs: Quantitative, qualitative, neuropsychological, and biological: Washington: American Psychological Association, S. 103-117

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1037/13620-007

Abstract: Ethnomethodology (EM) and conversation analysis (CA) are the somewhat confusing names of two related research traditions that were developed in the 1960s in the United States by Harold Garfinkel and by Harvey Sacks (with his coworkers Emanuel Schegloff and Gail Jefferson), respectively. The contexts for their initiatives were the theoretical and methodological debates in sociology that were current at the time. Since then, EM and CA have become more or less established paradigms that have attracted researchers from a range of disciplines around the world. As a first characterization, one can note their interest in the detailed ways in which members of society collaboratively constitute the situations in which they find themselves and the (inter)actions that take place in those situations. The general sociological issue of social order is reconsidered as a local achievement of members in situations, and the research objective is to explicate how this is done in an accounta ble way. CA can be seen as a specialized form of EM, originally focusing on verbal interaction and later also considering nonvocal aspects. It has developed a rather specific, relatively conventionalized research style using audio or video recordings and detailed transcripts as basic data. Other forms of EM use a much wider range of data types, such as ethnographic observations, while the approach is closely fitted to the chosen topic and the properties of the research site. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1525/si.2011.34.3.349

Abstract: Symbolic interactionism and ethnomethodology, while apparently similar in topic and approach, are radically different sociological perspectives. Garfinkel’s notion of a plenum is used to illustrate this difference with regard to their approaches to the concept of interaction. Ethnomethodology’s rejection of the concepts of actor and context, and its different treatment of meaning, are contrasted with symbolic interactionism’s terms of reference. • Elster, Jon (2010): Explaining social behavior. More nuts and bolts for the social sciences. Reprinted.. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press

Abstract: In this new edition of his critically acclaimed book, Jon Elster examines the nature of social behavior, proposing choice as the central concept of the social sciences. Extensively revised throughout, the book offers an overview of key explanatory mechanisms, drawing on many case studies and experiments to explore the nature of explanation in the social sciences; an analysis of the mental states - beliefs, desires, and emotions - that are precursors to action; a systematic comparison of rational-choice models of behavior with alternative accounts, and a review of mechanisms of social interaction ranging from strategic behavior to collective decision making. A wholly new chapter includes an exploration of classical moralists and Proust in charting mental mechanisms operating 'behind the back' of the agent, and a new conclusion points to the pitfalls and fallacies in current ways of doing social science, proposing guidelines for more modest and more robust procedures.

  • Langenohl, Andreas (2009): Geschichte versus Genealogie. In: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung/Forum: Qualitative Social Research (Online Journal) 10 (3)

Abstract: This paper addresses the almost complete disappearance of ethnomethodological approaches from the reflexivity debate in social-scientific theory and methodology since the 1980s. This disappearance is remarkable because many of the tropes and questions characterizing the debate around reflexivity had already been articulated in ethnomethodology. The main reason for this neglect, it is argued, is the productive effect it had, as it helped later debates find answers to the epistemological challenge of postmodern approaches entering sociological discourse from the direction of anthropology and science and technology studies. Those answers could never have stabilized in the presence of the fundamental ethnomethodological presupposition that reflexivity is an ontological feature of social reality. The paper ends with a number of suggestions concerning a revision of reflexivity in the social sciences, highlighting the performative aspects of social meaning, especially social-scientific meaning.

  • Maynard, Douglas W.; Clayman, Steven E. (2003) : Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis. In: Reynolds, Larry T.: Handbook of symbolic interactionism: Lanham, Md.: AltaMira Press, S. 173-202

Abstract: Over the past thirty years, symbolic interactionists have proposed, on one hand, a synthesis between symbolic interactionism and ethnomethodology, or, on the other hand, that these two forms of sociology are philosophically, conceptually, and methodologically incompatible. In reply, ethnomethodologists argue that neither the synthetic version nor the incompatibility hypothesis accurately understands ethnomethodology. Conversation analysis, which is related to ethnomethodology, no doubt gets painted by the same brushstrokes, and conversation analysts would raise similar objections to arguments about either synthesis or incompatibility. We agree that a synthesis between symbolic interactionism (SI) and ethnomethodology (EM) and conversation analysis (CA) is not possible. However, we do view SI and EM/CA as at least partly congruent. A chapter on EM and CA, accordingly, has a place in a book that is mainly about SI, and we aim to describe EM and CA and their approaches to th e study of everyday life and interaction. • Layes, Gabriel (2002): Interkulturelle Psychologie als kulturreflexive Sozialpsychologie - Theoretische Grundzuge und methodologische Konsequenzen

Abstract: Die Interkulturelle Psychologie wird als kulturreflexive Sozialpsychologie konzeptualisiert.

Abstract: Conflict between parties is a fact of life and is to be expected in most social settings. In some situations, the conflict may manifest itself only as a mild disagreement, whereas, in others, mortal combat is not out of the question. Handled properly conflict can lead to positive change and growth, yet if mishandled it can hinder relations and even lead to destruction. The process of gaining compliance in conflict situations can be grouped under three main issues: (1) the means used by one party to influence the attitudes or behaviors of another party, (2) the effectiveness of the influence attempts in gaining compliance, and (3) the various consequences, both positive and negative, associated with these attempts. The present chapter focuses on conflicts in dyadic relationships and presents the Interpersonal Power Interaction Model (IPIM) for understanding the process by which one party chooses tactics for changing behavior or attitudes in the other party. The IPIM can se rve as a n overarching theory in the field of power and can provide greater methodological unity and coordination. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Button, Graham (1991): Ethnomethodology and the human sciences. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511611827

Abstract: This book reappraises the significance of ethnomethodology in sociology in particular, and in the human sciences in general. It demonstrates how, through its empirical enquiries into the ordered properties of social action, ethnomethodology provides a radical respecification of the foundations of the human sciences, an achievement that has often been misunderstood. The chapters, by leading scholars, take up the specification of action and order in theorising, logic, epistemology, measurement, evidence, inference, the social actor, cognition, language and culture, and moral judgement, and underscore the ramifications for the human sciences of the ethnomethodologist's approach. Abstract: Outlines the basic principles of ethnomethodology, which is described as a special discipline of phenomenological sociology, and discusses its relationships with a Marxist theory of verbal communication. The article focuses on the following points: (1) the scientific-historical background of ethnomethodological sociology, (2) the view of society it reflects, (3) the object of its research, and (4) methodological positions in research on this topic.

Abstract: Discusses one of the recurrent problems associated with interpersonal, group, organizational, and intercultural training in communication, the assessment of outcomes. An approach is suggested for the evaluation of training and selection of programs utilizing behavioral assessment of participants' communication competence. The method involves the systematic collection and analysis of behavioral observation data along one or several predetermined dimensions by one or more observers. Preliminary use of pilot instruments indicated that the methodology provides a relatively efficient technique for generating reliable assessments of interactive competence in a variety of social settings. A range of uses of behavioral assessment techniques in communication training are discussed, and an application with 19 adult and young adult participants and 3 raters in intercultural adaptation training and selection is explored in some detail.
