This study aims at generating an input-process-output model of intercultural qualification in the context of academic education in Germany. The theoretical framework consists of defining in-tercultural qualification and localizing the topic within educational sciences. The topics intercul-tural competence and intercultural learning are discussed separately. There were two empirical studies: 1) 18 former participants of the Extracurricular Study Program for Intercultural Compe-tence at the Regensburg universities have been interviewed about the program’s learning pro-cesses and learning outcomes. Resulting data were analysed using qualitative methods, yielding a set of hypotheses on relations between preconditions, processes and outcomes of intercultural qualification. 2) At the end of the program, 129 participants completed a questionnaire con-structed on the results of the interview study producing quantitative data. Relevant input, pro-cess and output variables could be identified and were integrated into five user profiles: 1) sensi-tisation, 2) cognitive application, 3) activation, 4) behavioral application, and 5) potentialisation. These profiles were finally arranged in relation to knowledge transfer and behavioral transfer, thus yielding a transfer model of intercultural qualification, and were put in ascending order in an input-process-output model. This theoretically founded and empirically tested model de-scribes exemplarily preconditions, learning processes, learning outcomes, and control variables of intercultural qualification in the context of academic education in Germany. It can be used as a theoretical framework for further research or conceptualisation, implementation, and evalua-tion of intercultural qualification programs.

  • Trevino, Javier Omar (2015): Emotional and social intelligence. A study of interpersonal, intrapersonal, social awareness, and social facility skills of information technology professionals in higher education. ProQuest Information & Learning, US.

Abstract: Technology is exponentially growing at a rapid pace across all industries, including higher education. Those who support these technologies, information technology (IT) professionals, are susceptible to job pressure factors, such as stress, due to labor shortages and a need for more communication with people other than IT professionals across campuses. This raises concern about their ability to interact according to emotional intelligence (EI). Very little is known about two EI aspects of IT professionals (interpersonal and intrapersonal skills) and their relationship to professional roles. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between various roles of IT professionals in higher education and their interpersonal and intrapersonal skills of EI. The study employed an ex-post facto design. The independent variable consisted of IT personnel's professional roles, education, and social intelligence. The dependent variable was emotional intelligence, consisting of interpersonal and intrapersonal EI. Data were analyzed according to t-test, ANOVA, and correlation statistics. The participants were IT professionals at 20 four-year public universities in the Texas A&M and University of Texas systems. There were 94 IT professionals who participated in the study. The findings showed that IT professionals with a degree in technology had lower stress levels and lower self-esteem than IT professionals whose degree was in business. However, there were no statistical differences in IE among IT professionals as it related to job titles, number of years on the job, or highest degree earned. Further analyses revealed social intelligence was correlated to emotional intelligence, although the relationship was weak. The study showed that IT professional are socially awkward. Since results revealed that as social intelligence decreased so did their emotional intelligence, IT leaders should be cautious about which IT professionals they want to interact directly with students, staff, faculty, and administrators. Furthermore, IT departments may need to change hiring practices. Those IT professionals who have technical expertise coupled with good people skills can be called upon to interact with other campus personnel. Abstract: Academic integrity has received a great deal of attention as institutions of higher education look for ways to deal effectively with dishonest behaviors, including cheating and plagiarism, which some believe is the most critical issue facing academia today (Davis, Drinan, & Gallant, 2009). Given the prevalence of the problem, Davis and colleagues (2009) challenged educational institutions to determine ways to prevent cheating and suggested cultivating a culture in which academic dishonesty is clearly unacceptable. An honor system has been shown to effectively reduce dishonest behaviors such as cheating (e.g., McCabe & Treviño, 1993). There is a growing trend of revitalizing honor systems (e.g., Melgoza & Smith, 2008) or introducing new modified honor systems (e.g., McCabe & Pavela, 2000). Although there is a long history of honor codes at many institutions of higher learning, most researchers have focused on how an honor code affects the attitudes and behaviors of studen ts rathe r than on pedagogy. In this chapter, we provide a brief history of honor systems in higher education, explain how an honor code influences academic dishonesty, examine how an honor system can impact pedagogy, and offer practical advice for implementing an honor code in a classroom. • Maase, Kaspar (1994): Spiel ohne Grenzen. In: Zeitschrift fur Volkskunde 90 (1), S. 13-36
