(2005): System-initiated digressive proposals in automated human–computer telephone dialogues: the use of contrasting politeness strategies. In: International Journal of Human-Computer Studies 62 (1), S. 41-71. DOI: 10.1016/j.ijhcs.2004.08.001
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijhcs.2004.08.001 Abstract: System-initiated digressive proposals may be used to introduce new and unexpected information into automated telephone services. These digressions may be viewed as particularly pronounced forms of unsolicited interruptions as they contain information not directly related to the caller's intended activity. In human-human conversation, interruptions are considered to be speech acts which intrinsically threaten both the positive and negative face wants of the addressee and conversants adopt specific verbal strategies to mitigate the negative impact of their interruptions. A question therefore arises whether the introduction of face redressive expressions, based on human-human conversational strategies, into the design of system-initiated proposals in automated services can mitigate the negative impact of the interruptions. A usability experiment was conducted to examine the effectiveness of three contrasting politeness strategies for system-initiated digressions in a mass-market telephone banking dialogue using speech recognition technology. Participants (N= 111) experienced these proposals while using the automated service to perform banking tasks. Results indicated that all these system-initiated digressions-irrespective of politeness strategy employed-had a negative impact on the user attitudes towards the service. This paper reports these results and explores participants' perceptions of the politeness styles and registers employed in the system-initiated proposals.

(2005): A Review on the Person-Context Interaction Theories.. In: Psychological Science (China) 28 (5), S. 1256-1258
Abstract: Person-Context Interaction Theories proposed that the person-context system is an integrated, complex and dynamic totality, of which the individual is an active, purposeful part. The role of the context for individual functioning and development, principles in the functioning of the person-context system, and the structures and processes involved in the operation of person and context subsystem were analyzed in detail in these theories. Although these theoretical propositions are difficult to be operationalized, they have far-reaching implications for current psychological theories, methodology and research strategy. (2004): A six-factor structure of personality-descriptive adjectives. Solutions from psycholexical studies in seven languages. In: Journal of personality and social psychology 86 (2), S. 356-366. DOI: 10.1037/0022-3514.86.2.356
DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14769090 Abstract: Standard psycholexical studies of personality structure have produced a similar 6-factor solution in 7 languages (Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Polish). The authors report the content of these personality dimensions and interpret them as follows: (a) a variant of Extraversion, defined by sociability and liveliness (though not by bravery and toughness); (b) a variant of Agreeableness, defined by gentleness, patience, and agreeableness (but also including anger and ill temper at its negative pole); (c) Conscientiousness (emphasizing organization and discipline rather than moral conscience); (d) Emotionality (containing anxiety, vulnerability, sentimentality, lack of bravery, and lack of toughness, but not anger or ill temper); (e) Honesty-Humility; (f) Intellect/Imagination/Unconventionality. A potential reorganization of the Big Five factor structure is discussed.

(2004): Promoting social competence in preschool children: Evaluation of a social problem-solving training program as a universal measure for preventing antisocial behavior. In: KINDHEIT UND ENTWICKLUNG 13 (2), S. 113-121
Abstract: This paper reports results of a controlled evaluation study on the effectiveness of a social problem-solving training program. Thirtysix 4- to 6-year-old preschool children who took part in a 15-session training program were compared with 33 untreated controls. Social behavior was rated by parents (mother and father) and preschool teachers before and 3 months after training. Ratings by trainers on the on/off-task behavior of children during sessions indicated that the program implementation was sound. Furthermore, analyses confirmed small but consistently positive effects on the prosocial behavior of the children. Smaller effects were observed on behavior problem ratings, although trained children showed decreasing scores on antisocial behavior in maternal ratings. In sum, results replicated those from recent reviews and meta-analyses in the field, indicating that social skills training is more effective within risk groups. However, because the evaluated program was relatively unintensive, scored high in implementation, and had some positive effects on the prosocial behavior of preschool children, it can also be recommended as a promising universal prevention measure.

(2004): Thinking the voice: neural correlates of voice perception. In: Trends in cognitive sciences 8 (3), S. 129-135. DOI: 10.1016/j.tics.2004.01.008
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tics.2004.01.008 Abstract: The human voice is the carrier of speech, but also an "auditory face" that conveys important affective and identity information. Little is known about the neural bases of our abilities to perceive such paralinguistic information in voice. Results from recent neuroimaging studies suggest that the different types of vocal information could be processed in partially dissociated functional pathways, and support a neurocognitive model of voice perception largely similar to that proposed for face perception.

(2004): Group Work as an Antidote to the Isolation of Bearing an Invisible Stigma. In: Social Work With Groups 26 (3), S. 33-43. DOI: 10.1300/J009v26n03_05
Abstract: This article examines the experience of social stigma, both visible and invisible, faced by many of the clients seen in social work groups. The author uses the work of Goffman (1963) as a theoretical base for a discussion of the dilemmas of coping with stigma, especially when it is invisible to others. After reviewing related literature, the author reflects on common themes in group work with incest survivors and the infertile. Emphasis is placed on the immediate benefits of seeing and hearing others who live with the same stigma. Implications for practice are presented. (2004): Unspoken rules of spoken interaction. In: Communications of the ACM 47 (4), S. 38-44. DOI: 10.1145/975817.975842
Abstract: Will users willingly engage in a social chat with an animated real estate agent or tell their troubles to a virtual coach? Evidence to date indicates the answer is, for the most part, yes. In the commercial arena, people have shown willingness to engage artifacts such as Tamagotchis, Furbies, and robotic baby dolls in ever more sophisticated and encompassing social interactions. Experience in the laboratory also indicates users will not only readily engage in a wide range of social behavior appropriate to the task context, but that the computer's behavior will have the same effect on them as if they had been interacting with another person [3–5]. This trend seems to indicate a human readiness, or even need, to engage computational artifacts in deeper and more substantive social interactions. Unfortunately, there is no cookbook defining all of the rules for human face-to-face interaction that human-computer interface practitioners can simply implement. However, many of the most fundamental rules have been codified in work by linguists, sociolinguists, and social psychologists (for example, [2]), and exploration that makes explicit use of these rules in work with ECAs and robotic interfaces has begun. By at least being cognizant of these rules, and at most by giving them explicit representation in system design, developers can build systems that are not only more natural, intuitive, and flexible to use, but result in better outcomes for many different kinds of tasks.

(2004): Models of social networks based on social distance attachment. In: Physical review. E, Statistical, nonlinear, and soft matter physics 70 (5 Pt 2). DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.70.056122
DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15600707 Abstract: We propose a class of models of social network formation based on a mathematical abstraction of the concept of social distance. Social distance attachment is represented by the tendency of peers to establish acquaintances via a decreasing function of the relative distance in a representative social space. We derive analytical results (corroborated by extensive numerical simulations), showing that the model reproduces the main statistical characteristics of real social networks: large clustering coefficient, positive degree correlations, and the emergence of a hierarchy of communities. The model is confronted with the social network formed by people that shares confidential information using the Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encryption algorithm, the so-called web of trust of PGP.

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of our work towards building humanoid robots that can work alongside people as cooperative teammates. We present our theoretical framework based on a novel combination of joint intention theory and collaborative discourse theory, and demonstrate how it can be applied to allow a human to work cooperatively with a humanoid robot on a joint task using speech, gesture, and expressive cues. Such issues must be addressed to enable many new and exciting applications for humanoid robots that require them to assist ordinary people in daily activities or to work as capable members of human-robot teams.

(2004) : Socially Intelligent Agents in Human Primate Culture In: Payr, Sabine; Trappl, Robert (Hg.): Agent culture: Human-agent interaction in a multicultural world: Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates Publishers, S. 45-71
Abstract: This chapter discusses socially intelligent agents (SIA) in the context of human culture. The first part of the chapter provides an introduction to SIA research and focuses on the issue of realism versus believability- namely, to what extent SIAs need to imitate behavior and appearance of humans. The lifelike agents hypothesis is analyzed in particular from the perspective of social robots. I give examples showing that with respect to realism less might be more. Mori’s ’uncanny valley’ analysis of believable robots is explained. It is shown that the issue of believability is particularly crucial for technology whose purpose is to change the behavior, attitudes, beliefs (or, more generally, minds) of humans, as it is the case for SIAs. Therefore, SIAs fall under the category of technology called persuasive technology. The second part of the chapter addresses primate cultures, their phylogenetic origins, and how human culture is grounded in and shaped by cognitive capacities that the human species have evolved. I suggest that these cognitive capacities are important to consider in the design of SIAs. The chapter concludes by discussing the possible role of SIAs in the evolution of human cultures. I argue that SIAs can play a role in preserving cultural diversity-a huge technological challenge, but a possibility to make SIA technology more humane by acknowledging the individual and cultural roots of people, rather than treating them as an increasingly homogeneous group of users. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-8624.2004.00721.x Abstract: Social information processing theory has been posited as a description of how mental operations affect behavioral responding in social situations. Arsenio and Lemerise (this issue) proposed that consideration of concepts and methods from moral domain models could enhance this description. This paper agrees with their proposition, although it suggests that numerous additional concepts about the nature of latent mental structures (e.g., working models, schemas, scripts, object relations, classical conditioning) provide equally compelling refinements to processing theory. Furthermore, theoretical and methodological challenges in integrating latent mental structures into processing theory remain.
