(2003): Nonreductive Individualism Part II—Social Causation, S. 537-559
Abstract: In Part I, the author argued for nonreductive individualism (NRI), an account of the individual-collective relation that is ontologically individualist yet rejects methodological individualism. However, because NRI is ontologically individualist, social entities and properties would seem to be only analytic constructs, and if so, they would seem to be epiphenomenal, since only real things can have causal power. In general, a nonreductionist account is a relatively weak defense of sociological explanation if it cannot provide an account of how social properties can participate in causal relations. In this article, the author extends NRI to address this weakness and provides an account of social causation that he refers to as supervenient causation.

(2003): Nonverbal interaction between hitchhikers and drivers. In: Semiotica (147). DOI: 10.1515/semi.2003.092
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1515/semi.2003.092 Abstract: This essay reconstructs the implicit knowledge of a competent hitchhiker from the viewpoint of semiotics. The initial phase of hitchhiking is purely nonverbal. The hitchhiker starts the interaction by signaling that s/he wants a lift. In the standard case, the sign chosen is a culture-specific gesture. The driver produces one of the following four actions: (i) in the successful case, s/he stops and gives the hitchhiker a lift, whereas (ii) in the opposite case of ultimate non-success, s/he shows no perceptible reaction. In other constellations, s/he (iii) produces an ‘answering’ gesture or (iv) expresses a specific mood, intention, or attitude toward the hitchhiker by changing his or her driving behavior. This article concentrates on actions (iii) and (iv) and reconstructs them as equivalents of verbal utterances, each with a specific propositional content and illocutionary force. In the most elaborate interactions, one can detect a real ‘gestural dialog’ with several turn-takings.

(2003): Was macht Partnerschaften glücklich und stabil?.

(2003): Respect for group members: Intragroup determinants of collective identification and group-serving behavior. In: Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin 29 (2), S. 183-193. DOI: 10.1177/0146167202239043
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1177/0146167202239043 Abstract: This experiment examined how (disrespectful vs. respectful) treatment and (negative vs. positive) performance evaluation, both received from the same fellow group members, affects collective identification and willingness to engage in group-serving behavior. It was predicted and found that respectful as opposed to disrespectful intragroup treatment increased collective identification and willingness to engage in group-serving behavior in the immediate group situation, irrespective of whether intragroup evaluation was positive or negative. There was also evidence of a mediating role of collective identification. Regression analyses based on the measurement of perceived intragroup treatment and perceived intragroup evaluation as continuous variables corroborated these findings but also pointed to limits of the positive effects of respectful intragroup treatment. Finally, the interrelation of treatment and evaluation by fellow group members as two possible components of intragroup respect are discussed as well as the political dimension of research on intragroup respect.

(2003): Virtual Machines and Consciousness. (Special Issue on Machine Consciousness). In: Journal of Consciousness Studies 10 (4-5), S. 133-172
Abstract: Replication or even modelling of consciousness in machines requires some clarifications and refinements of our concept of consciousness. Design of, construction of, and interaction with artificial systems can itself assist in this conceptual development. We start with the tentative hypothesis that although the word 'consciousness' has no well-defined meaning, it is used to refer to aspects of human and animal information processing. We then argue that we can enhance our understanding of what these aspects might be by designing and building virtual- machine architectures capturing various features of consciousness. This activity may in turn nurture the development of our concepts of consciousness, showing how an analysis based on information processing virtual machines answers old philosophical puzzles as well enriching empirical theories. This process of developing and testing ideas by developing and testing designs leads to gradual refinement of many of our pre-theoretical concepts of mind, showing how they can be construed as implicitly 'architecture-based' concepts. Understanding how human-like robots with appropriate architectures are likely to feel puzzled about qualia may help us resolve those puzzles. The concept of 'qualia' turns out to be an 'architecture-based' concept, while individual qualia concepts are 'architecture-driven'.

(2003): Extended hierarchical task network planning for interactive comedy. In: INTELLIGENT AGENTS AND MULTI-AGENT SYSTEMS (2891), S. 205-213
Abstract: We focus on interactive comedy, a relatively new genre in interactive drama, in this study. To be able to maintain the story, we adopt hierarchical task network planning (HTN) for planning of a character agent. We then extend HTN such that the extended HTN allows for the direct use of character failures, higher interactions with the viewer, and more story variations. Our extensions lead to effective extraction of laughter from the viewer. We test our system with a short visual comedy similar to the popular Mr. Bean(TM) series.

(2003): Perception mixture and metaphor. In: Zeitschrift für Semiotik (25), S. 241-262
Abstract: Widespread metaphors such as "he exploded" project physical categories to emotional phenomena. The traditional two-domain model of metaphor postulates that in such cases the source domain enables the understanding of the target domain. The authors prove that this model is sufficient to explain culturally entrenched metaphors, but fails to cope with more creative cases. They propose a more sophisticated multi-space model of conceptual projection which contains the blend as an additional domain. The power of this model is demonstrated by several analyses, e.g., of the "Grim Reaper', the "Birth Stork", the desktop metaphor of man-machine interaction as well as the decapitated speaker in Dante's Inferno.

(2003): The group engagement model: Procedural justice, social identity, and cooperative behavior. In: Personality and Social Psychology Review 7 (4), S. 349-361. DOI: 10.1207/S15327957PSPR0704_07
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1207/S15327957PSPR0704_07 Abstract: The group engagement model expands the insights of the group-value model of procedural justice and the relational model of authority into an explanation for why procedural justice shapes cooperation in groups, organizations, and societies. It hypothesizes that procedures are important because they shape people's social identity within groups, and social identity in turn influences attitudes, values, and behaviors. The model further hypothesizes that resource judgments exercise their influence indirectly by shaping social identity. This social identity mediation hypothesis explains why people focus on procedural justice, and in particular on procedural elements related to the quality of their interpersonal treatment, because those elements carry the most social identity-relevant information. In this article, we review several key insights of the group engagement model, relate these insights to important trends in psychological research on justice, and discuss implications of the model for the future of procedural justice research.

(2003): Politeness. Cambridge, UK; New York: Cambridge University Press (Key topics in sociolinguistics). Online verfügbar unter http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511615184
Abstract: Using a wide range of data from real-life speech situations, this new introduction to politeness breaks away from the limitations of current models and argues that the proper object of study in politeness theory must be commonsense notions of what politeness and impoliteness are

(2003): Breaking the rules. Personal and social responses to coping norm‐violations. In: Anxiety, Stress & Coping 16 (2), S. 133-153. DOI: 10.1080/10615806.2003.10382969
Abstract: Examined the personal and social responses to norm-violating coping behavior: non-intervention in controllable situations and non-acceptance of uncontrollable situations. In Study 1, 400 subjects from the general population (age range 18-80 years) recalled two stressful episodes and reported their personal and perceived social disapproval of coping-norm violations. Observers disapproved of both types of norm violations, whereas actors tended to disapprove of non-intervention but approved of non-acceptance. In Study 2, 111 psychology students (mean age 22 years) were presented with norm-breaking coping behavior in hypothetical scenarios and indicated the extent of their disapproval of and negative sanctions for the two coping behaviors. Information about the actors' perspective was given in half the scenarios. Non-intervention was disapproved of and sanctioned more strongly than non-acceptance. Moreover, there was a general disregard for the actor's personal perspective. It is concluded that coping behavior is socially constrained, and that the personal and social perspectives on accepting uncontrollable situations differ. zitiert von 24

(2003): Cross-Cultural Pragmatics. The Semantics of Human Interaction. 2nd ed. 2003. Berlin, New York: Mouton de Gruyter (Mouton textbook). Online verfügbar unter http://www.reference-global.com/action/showBook?doi=10.1515/9783110220964
Abstract: This book challenges the approaches to human interaction based on supposedly universal 'maxims of conversation' and 'principles of politeness,' which fly in the face of reality as experienced by millions of people crossing language boundaries (refugees, immigrants, etc.) and which cannot help in the practical tasks of cross-cultural communication and education. In contrast to such approaches, this book is both theoretical and practical: it shows that in different societies, norms of human interaction are different and reflect different cultural attitudes and values; and it offers a framework within which different cultural norms and different ways of speaking can be effectively explored, explained, and taught. The book discusses data from a wide range of languages and it shows that the meanings expressed in human interaction and the different 'cultural scripts' prevailing in different speech communities can be clearly and intelligibly described and compared by using a 'natural semantic metalanguage,' based on empirically established universal human concepts. As the book shows, this metalanguage can be used as a basis for teaching successful cross-cultural communication, including the teaching of languages in a cultural context. Anna Wierzbicka is Professor at Australian National University, Canberra. 'The book can be regarded as a recapitulation of results obtained in all former scholarly projects carried by its author. [It] is one if the best manuals of widely understood pragmatics and ethnolinguistics of human speech, the more so as the traditoinal grammars and handbooks of linguistics usually leave the ethnography of speech in the background of linguistics analyses.'Tomasz Wicherkiewicz in: Linguistics and Oriental Studies from Poznan
