    Abstract: Over the past two decades the way in which we communicate has changed drastically with the evolution of mobile phones and the Internet. Professionals in the field of psychology have raised concerns regarding the impact these changes are having on the adolescent population. Research in this area has been vacillating between both positive and negative outcomes. The present study sought to identify a connection between time spent communicating though technology and emotional social intelligence (ESI), defined as the ability to identify emotions in one's self and others, utilize that knowledge effectively, and cope with the stress of normal life (Bar-On, 2006). In this study, 74 students from a high school in northern New Jersey completed two self report measures, the Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version (Short) and a technology survey, which asked participants to estimate the amount of time they spend engaging with friends and family both face-to-face and through technology. Results suggest that time spent communicating through technology has no relationship to general ESI. However, a closer look at the components of ESI, resulted in the identification of statistically significant relationships. Contrary to the hypothesis, the more time participants reported communicating through technology, the higher their scores on the Interpersonal scale. Increased time communicating through technology was also related to decreases in the Stress Management scale. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)

    Abstract: Providing opportunities for children to engage with intercultural learning has frequently focused on exposure to the ritual, celebrations and festivals of cultures, with the view that such experiences will result in greater acceptance of cultural differences. Intercultural conflict is often avoided, bringing as it does particular pedagogical, ethical and political dilemmas of which cultures we place in conflict in the multicultural classroom. In this paper we discuss an alternative approach, providing children with an interactive learning experience with synthetic cultures and characters. The agent architecture developed to enable intelligent agents to exhibit culturally appropriate affect and behaviours is outlined. MIXER, an experiential learning application developed for 9-11 year old children on intercultural conflict is described, highlighting the learning goals and approaches. A school-based evaluation of MIXER with 144 UK children is presented. Children demonstrated high levels of comprehension, engagement and enjoyment of MIXER, with MIXER contributing to near and far transfer, supporting children's cognitive, emotional and behavioural learning and stimulating discussion and debate about how to resolve conflict.

    Abstract: Should an intelligent software tutor be polite, in an effort to motivate and cajole students to learn, or should it use more direct language? If it should be polite, under what conditions? In a series of studies in different contexts (e.g., lab versus classroom) with a variety of students (e.g., low prior knowledge versus high prior knowledge), the politeness effect was investigated in the context of web-based intelligent tutoring systems, software that runs on the Internet and employs artificial intelligence and learning science techniques to help students learn. The goal was to pinpoint the appropriate conditions for having the web-based tutors provide polite feedback and hints (e.g., ’Let’s convert the units of the first item’) versus direct feedback and hints (e.g., ’Convert the units of the first item now’). In the study presented in this paper, 132 high school students in a classroom setting, grouped as low and high prior knowledge learners according to a pre-intervention knowledge questionnaire, did not benefit more from polite feedback and hints than direct feedback and hints on either an immediate or delayed posttest, both of which contained near transfer and conceptual test items. Of particular interest and contrary to an earlier lab study, low prior knowledge students did not benefit more from using the polite version of a tutor. On the other hand, a politeness effect was observed for the students who made the most errors during the intervention, a different proxy for low prior knowledge, hinting that even in a classroom setting, politeness may be beneficial for more needy students. This article presents and discusses these results, as well as discussing the politeness effect more generally, its theoretical underpinnings, and future directions.
