Abstract: Social Signal Processing is the first book to cover all aspects of the modeling, automated detection, analysis, and synthesis of nonverbal behavior in human-human and human-machine interactions. Authoritative surveys address conceptual foundations, machine analysis and synthesis of social signal processing, and applications. Foundational topics include affect perception and interpersonal coordination in communication; later chapters cover technologies for automatic detection and understanding such as computational paralinguistics and facial expression analysis and for the generation of artificial social signals such as social robots and artificial agents. The final section covers a broad spectrum of applications based on social signal processing in healthcare, deception detection, and digital cities, including detection of developmental diseases and analysis of small groups. Each chapter offers a basic introduction to its topic, accessible to students and other newcomers, and then outlines challenges and future perspectives for the benefit of experienced researchers and practitioners in the field.

Abstract: Sprachliche Höflichkeit ist ein breit diskutiertes Thema in Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit. Oft wird ein Mangel an Höflichkeit oder gar deren Verfall beklagt. Neue Medien und die zunehmende Interkulturalität scheinen das Problem zu verschärfen. In der Sprachwissenschaft greifen zahlreiche Ansätze solche Fragen auf und versuchen eine wissenschaftliche Klärung und Einordnung in neuere theoretische und methodische Entwicklungen. Der Band dokumentiert ausgewählte Beiträge einer internationalen Fachkonferenz. Er präsentiert aktuelle Entwicklungen in der deutschen Sprache und neue Ansätze in der Höflichkeitsforschung, auch in kontrastiver Perspektive und in verschiedenen Anwendungsfeldern. Kulturhistorische Einschätzungen über Ursprung und Entwicklung von Höflichkeitskonventionen sowie Ausblicke auf künftige Herausforderungen runden den Band ab.

Abstract: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Im/politeness brings together the work of linguists, psychologists, neuroscientists, and second language experts in order to provide readers with a snapshot of the possibilities for studying im/politeness in the 21st century. The volume is organized along methodological lines in three parts each preceded by a brief introduction outlining the evolution and advantages and disadvantages of the relevant methodologies, while a specially commissioned epilogue places the volume in the field as a whole. Part I is dedicated to self-reporting studies, Part II covers observational studies, and Part III introduces experimental studies. A central goal of the present collection is to make a case for the relevance of all these types of data and of both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to the ongoing theoretical debates in the field of im/politeness.

Abstract: The contributers included in this volume provide critical assessments of both a range of traditions in social theory, and of their current relevance. In addition, they represent endeavors to apply, refine, integrate, or advance particular traditions in order to enhance our ability to analyze conditions of social life in the twenty-first century and to confront a variety of related challenges. Several of the contributors present efforts to combine the application, refinement, integration, and advancement of particular theoretical traditions. Abstract: Sprachliche Höflichkeit ist ein zentrales Thema in der öffentlichen Diskussion, in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung und in der unterrichtlichen Vermittlung. In alltagssprachlichen Diskursen wird die Angemessenheit von Äußerungen oft nur an (nach?) Etiketteregeln beurteilt. In der Sprachwissenschaft wird versucht, Ausdrucksformen von Höflichkeit sowie ihre Verwendung und Funktion in der Kommunikation theoretisch und empirisch fundiert zu beschreiben. Die 20 Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes dokumentieren Ergebnisse internationaler Forschung, die anhand zahlreicher Beispiele Höflichkeit zwischen normativen und deskriptiven Ansätzen verortet und neue Perspektiven auf das Gegenstandsfeld vermittelt. Dabei steht vor allem die Kulturgebundenheit von Höflichkeit im Mittelpunkt. Der vergleichende Blick auf Höflichkeitsformen in verschiedenen Sprachen und in unterschiedlichen Kontexten erlaubt eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den „Dogmen“ der Höflichkeitsforschung und anwendungsorientierte Weiterentwicklungen.

Abstract: Dem Thema ‘Sprachliche Höflichkeit’ wird wieder eine verstärkte Aufmerksamkeit in Linguistik und Didaktik zuteil. Im Kontext zunehmender Internationalisierung und dem damit verbundenen höheren Aufkommen an interkultureller Kommunikation, aber auch im Kontext der zunehmenden Verbreitung neuer Medien ergeben sich neue Fragestellungen für Theoriebildung und Methodenentwicklung. Der Sammelband präsentiert 17 Beiträge zu theoretischen und methodischen Grundlagen, zu kulturkontrastiven und interkulturellen Themenstellungen sowie Vorschläge zum DaF-Unterricht. Neben historischen und aktuellen Beschreibungsansätzen werden Realisationsformen sprachlicher Höflichkeit am Beispiel von verschiedenen Sprachhandlungsmustern und Textsorten sowie Kommunikationsdomänen in unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten analysiert. Schließlich folgt ein Ausblick auf interkulturelle Trainings und DaF-Lehrwerke.

Abstract: The volume addresses the enormous imbalance that exists between academic interest in politeness phenomena when compared to impoliteness phenomena. Researchers working with Brown and Levinson's ([1978] 1987) seminal work on politeness rarely focused explicitly on impoliteness. As a result, only one aspect of facework/relational work has been studied in detail. Next to this research desideratum, politeness research is on the move again, with alternative conceptions of politeness to those of Brown and Levinson being further developed. In this volume researchers present, discuss and explore the concept of linguistic impoliteness, the crucial differences and interconnectedness between lay understandings of impoliteness and the academic concept within a theory of facework/relational work, as well as the exercise of power that is involved when impoliteness occurs. The authors offer solid discussions of the theoretical issues involved and draw on data from political interaction, interaction with legally constituted authorities, workplace interaction in the factory and the office, code-switching and Internet practices. The collection offers inspiration for research on impoliteness in many different research fields, such as (critical) discourse analysis, conversation analysis, pragmatics and stylistics, as well as linguistic approaches to studies in conflict and conflict resolution.

Abstract: This collection of 13 original papers focuses on the phenomemon of politeness in language. It presents the most important problems in developing a theory of linguistic politeness, which must deal with the crucial differences between lay notions of politeness in different cultures and the term "politeness" as a concept within a theory of lingustic politeness. The universal validity of the term itself is called into question, as are models by Brown and Levison, Lakoff and Leech. New approaches are suggested. In addition to this theoretical discussion, an empirical section presents a number of case studies and research projects in linguistic politeness. These show what has been achieved within current models and what still remains to be done, in particular with reference with cross-cultural studies in politeness and differences between a Western and a non-Western approach to the subject.

Abstract: These essays, by anthropologists and anthropological linguists, draw on material from speech communities in three continents to raise fundamental questions about the ways in which interrogative and politeness forms are used in day-to-day social interaction. The authors suggest that interrogative and politeness forms have universal features which make them efficient for certain strategies of interaction. Why should these strategies constantly recur? Here the focus shifts to the consideration of status and power, social roles and social distance. Esther Goody looks at the way in whichy the institutionalization of questioning allows only for speech acts consistent with status differences. Brown and Levinson claim that speech acts are potentially threatening to those being addressed, and that politeness forms have evolved as a mechanism for reducing such threats. They analyse the conditions under which politeness forms will be used and show that their findings are consistent with data drawn from India, Mexico and the US.
