(2017) : Benevolent sexism and cross-gender helping: A subtle reinforcement of existing gender relations.: Intergroup Helping: Berlin, Germany: Axel Springer SE, S. 23-43, zuletzt geprüft am 03.06.2018
Abstract: Cross-gender helping interactions can perpetuate and consolidate the role of men as competent and agentic, and the role of women as passive, incompetent, and dependent. Our theorising integrates the logic of the Intergroup Helping as Status Relations model (IHSR) on the one hand, and research on benevolent sexism—the ideology that men should offer protection and affection to women in return for compliance with traditional gender roles—on the other. Specifically, we reasoned that because benevolent sexism maintains gender inequalities through paternalistic cooperation rather than through overt hostility and conflict, helping relations may play a crucial role in the process of translating this ideology into actual behavioural mechanisms that perpetuate traditional gender roles. In the following sections, we first present theorising and research on the IHSR, which puts forward the distinction between autonomy-oriented and dependency-oriented forms of intergroup helping, suggesti ng that the latter might serve as a subtle mechanism for maintaining intergroup inequality. We next present theorising and research on benevolent sexism, and explain how this ideology reinforces traditional gender roles through 'sweet persuasion' rather than coercion. We then discuss our own line of research, which demonstrates how the endorsement of benevolent sexism leads men and women to engage in dependency-oriented helping relations, which perpetuate traditional gender roles through seemingly cooperative interactions. Based on this research, we argue that helping relations between men and women can become an implicit, indirect mechanism for maintaining the gender hierarchy. We discuss this possibility in the light of related work on the psychological consequences of implicit—as opposed to explicit—forms of intergroup bias. We conclude by discussing the implications of our work for social change, and by outlining forms of cross-gender helping that may challenge rathe r than m aintain the existing gender hierarchy. (2016): Help to perpetuate traditional gender roles. Benevolent sexism increases engagement in dependency-oriented cross-gender helping. In: Journal of personality and social psychology 110 (1), S. 55-75. DOI: 10.1037/pspi0000037
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1037/pspi0000037 Abstract: Based on theorizing that helping relations may serve as a subtle mechanism to reinforce intergroup inequality, the present research (N = 1,315) examined the relation between benevolent sexism (i.e., a chivalrous yet subtly oppressive view of women) and helping. In cross-gender interactions, the endorsement of (Studies 1, 3, and 4) or exposure to (Study 2) benevolent sexism predicted (a) men's preference to provide women with dependency-oriented help (i.e., direct assistance) rather than tools for autonomous coping, and (b) women's preference to seek dependency-oriented help rather than tools for autonomous coping. Benevolent sexism did not predict men's and women's engagement in dependency-oriented helping relations in same-gender interactions. Studies 1 and 2 examined behavioral intentions in response to a series of hypothetical scenarios; Studies 3 and 4 examined actual behavior in tests of mathematical and logical ability, and pointed to assumed partner's expectations as a potential mediator. The converging evidence supports the hypothesis that benevolent sexism encourages engagement in cross-gender helping relations that perpetuate traditional gender roles.

(2014): Personal remote assistance in Ambient Assisted Living - Experimental research of elderly people's trust and their intention to use. In: International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction 30 (7). Online verfügbar unter URL: http://www.hcirn.com/res/period/ijhci.php
Abstract: Analyzed the meaning of two different support functions regarding the use of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). 32 older persons (mean age 69 years) and a younger control group (n = 21; mean age 24 years) were examined in an experiment with three different tasks using a tablet computer. The first group operated with a mock-up that provided personal remote assistance (PRA) and the second group with one that provided embedded technical assistance (ETA). The main results show that older participants with PRA solve significantly more tasks than people with ETA. Moreover, a significant influence of perceived ease of use with PRA is revealed. Multiple regressions in the senior sample highlight a significant connection between trust in AAL technology and perceived reliability as well as perceived ease of use. No significant correlation between the type of assistance and older persons' trust, as well as an intention to use AAL, was found.

(2012): Justice and Conflicts. Theoretical and Empirical Contributions. Berlin, Heidelberg: Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
Abstract: Explained the complex construct of moral courage. Moral courage is defined as courageous behavior accompanied by anger and indignation which intends to enforce societal and ethical norms without regard to one's own social costs. It is the risk of negative social consequences that distinguishes moral courage from other forms of prosocial behavior. Similarities and differences between moral courage, heroism, and social control are discussed. Determinants promoting or inhibiting morally courageous behavior include situational factors and particular personality traits including justice sensitivity, empathy, high self-assurance, and open-mindedness. The presence or absence of others has been found to be a particularly significant determinant of helping behavior but not morally courageous behavior. Training programs designed to promote moral courage are outlined. In summary, moral courage is an important concept and should be promoted within society. zitiert von: 59

(2009) : Wirtschaftsethik trifft Organisationspsychologie: Spiegeln Ethikkodizes organisationspsychologische Konzepte zum (un-)moralischen Verhalten wider? In: Raab, Gerhard; Unger, Alexander (Hg.): Der Mensch im Mittelpunkt wirtschaftlichen Handelns: Tagungsband zur 15. Fachtagung der Gesellschaft für angewandte Wirtschaftspsychologie Ludwigshafen 10. 11. Juli 2009: 1. Auflage: Lengerich: Pabst Science Publishers, S. 427-434
Abstract: Die Rolle von Ethikkodizes in Unternehmen wird analysiert.

(2003): Explaining cultural differences in evaluations of emotional support behaviors: Exploring the mediating influences of value systems and interaction goals. In: Communication Research 30 (2), S. 113-146. DOI: 10.1177/0093650202250873
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1177/0093650202250873 Abstract: Research suggests that affirming, emotion-focused expressions of comfort effectively provide social support. However, little research has examined whether preferred approaches to providing support differ as a function of culture and, if so, why. This study sought to document, for both the Barbee and Cunningham typology of support behaviors and the Burleson hierarchy of comforting messages, whether there are cultural differences in preferred approaches to emotional support provision and, if so, what factors might account for these differences. Participants completed assessments of (a) the appropriateness of using solace, solve, dismiss, and escape behaviors, (b) the perceived sensitivity of comforting messages varying in degree of person centeredness, (c) interaction goal orientation, (d) the value placed on skill in comforting, and (e) collectivist and individualist values. Participants were Euro-American, and Chinese. Analyses indicated there were significant cultural differences in evaluations of support behaviors and that these differences were partially mediated by interaction goals and value orientations. (2000): Helfen, Strafen, Überwachen. Begriff und Praxis sozialer Kontrolle. In: Gruppe. Interaktion. Organisation. Zeitschrift für Angewandte Organisationspsychologie (GIO) 31 (1), S. 31-41. DOI: 10.1007/s11612-000-0003-6
