DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3771419 Abstract: We evaluated the effectiveness, generality, and social validity of a modified version of a competency-based self-control package developed by Stevenson and Fantuzzo (1984). Three underachieving fifth-grade students were trained to use this intervention to increase their arithmetic proficiency. Results indicated that the intervention produced improved arithmetic performance. Moreover, all possible classes of generalization were evidenced for the participants. Social validity data showed that the children's arithmetic performance either surpassed or approached the mean performance of their higher achieving classmates. Additionally, teachers reported that the intervention was effective, appropriate for classroom use, and easy to implement.

Abstract: Am Beispiel der Anwendungen der Gentechnologie auf den Menschen werden einige Grundzuge des gesellschaftlichen Aushandelns neuer Techniken dargestellt. Zunachst werden Tendenzen der Anwendung der Gentechnik charakterisiert, denen Kontrollanspruche entgegengesetzt werden. Danach wird die Relevanz der Moral fur die Steuerung technischer Entwicklung unter der Bedingung funktional ausdifferenzierter Handlungsbereiche diskutiert. Abstract: Presents a norm-centered psychological model of crime and delinquency as forms of deviant behavior. The model is based on the theory of cognitive-affective regulation developed by U. Moser et al (1981). It includes consideration of situational and central modes of control, psychic regulation processes involved in processing normative conflicts, the influence of social control (e.g., labelling) on the intensity and resolution of conflict, and the influence of conflict processing strategies on the classification of deviant behavior.

Abstract: Der vorliegende Aufsatz präsentiert einen alternativen Ansatz zur traditionellen, normorientierten linguistischen Analyse von Höflichkeit. Drei emotive Dimensionen des Sprechens werden als wichtige Parameter des Höflichkeitsphänomens erörtert: Selbstsicherheit, positive und negative Emotionen sowie deren Intensität. Bei dyadischer Interaktion werden diese Dimensionen durch aufeinander bezogene verbale, prosodische und kinesische Signale übermittelt. Die wesentliche emotive Aufgabe des Sprechers, der interpersonelles Mißverständnis vermeiden will, ist, nach unserer Meinung, nicht, höflich im traditionellen Sinne zu sein, sondern unterstützend im Hinblick auf die Bedürfnisse des Partners nach persönlicher Autonomie und Anerkennung. Dies geschieht durch die Übermittlung entsprechender multimodaler Signale.

Abstract: During the past fifteen years the scholarly study of manners has become increasingly active. Though the most important contribution to the literature Norbert Elias's The Civilizing Process is, in fact, an older book, it has only recently attracted much attention. l The work of historians has been matched by sociologists such as Erving Goffman and the ethnomethodologists who have uncovered a wonderland of social process in the apparently trivial encounters of "everyday life." What is perhaps more curious than this recent interest in manners is the fact that, with the exception of anthropologists, scholars have so long left manners to the amateurs. From the Renaissance to the French Revolution manners were an essential aspect of the ideal of civilization and were thought worthy of the serious attention of intelligent men. The literary vehicle for the discussion of manners was the courtesy book, a genre that for almost three hundred years, from Elyot to Chesterfield, remained a lively and important strand of English literature. While including discussions of the minor formulations of etiquette, courtesy literature was certainly not limited to these. A variety of different subjects might be examined, but typically the genre concerned itself with the advocacy of ideals of character, accomplishments, habits, manners, and morals-in short, the art of living in society. The steps of a fashionable dance consorted with injunctions to piety, the worthiness of the chase with the importance of Aristotelian moderation, the rules of the table with the requiremenfs of justice. What made the genre odd to modern taste was its mixture of elements of "high" and "low" culture. Manners had not yet been dismissed as trivial and were discussed by essayists alongside the most serious moral ideas without a sense of incongruity and by the greatest writers without a sense of derogeance.

Abstract: Am Beispiel von Daten über die Interaktions- und Kommunikationshäufigkeiten in Sechs-Personen-Gruppen werden die Methodik der ordinalen Netzwerkskalierung (ONS) und ihre theoretischen Implikationen für die Kleingruppen- und soziale Interaktionsforschung demonstriert. Ausgangspunkt der ONS sind Matrizen mit Interaktionshäufigkeiten. Valide Strukturgleichungen zeigen, dass eins der Elemente (also etwa der Gruppenmitglieder) einen zentraleren Sender- und Empfängerstatus aufweist. Status ist dabei als ein relationales Konzept (und nicht als Person- oder Positionsmerkmal) definiert. Erstaunlicherweise ist es ausreichend, die relativen Kommunikationsfrequenzen von und zu der zentralen Position einer Gruppe zu kennen, um die relativen Kommunikationsfrequenzen in der gesamten Gruppe ableiten zu können. Grundannahmen und Regeln der ONS werden dargestellt; die ONS-Befunde werden Ergebnissen aus Analysen von Kommunikationsintentionen gegenübergestellt.

Abstract: Reviews the works of several authors who suggest that interaction with computers may have socializing effects on humans. Some of the problems of assessing these effects are discussed. In view of Vygotsky's and G. H. Mead's theories that thinking is the result of internalized verbal communication and assuming that the social competence of computers will remain restricted compared to that of humans, it is argued that in the long run the socializing effects of computerizing everyday life may be a restriction of thought and a decline or even complete loss of social competence in the fields of language, pragmatic communication, and morality. Nach Explikation einiger methodischer Probleme und der Zusammenfassung einiger Beobachtungen uber das Verhalten von Kindern, Jugendlichen und Erwachsenen wird die These entfaltet, dass unter den hypothetischen Bedingungen einer in allen Lebensbereichen computerisierten Gesellschaft durch die sozialisatorischen Effekte der Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion bei systematischer Beschranktheit der Computer langfristig eine Reduktion menschlicher Interaktions- und Kommuniaktionsfahigkeit, insbesondere in den Sinngehalten der Sprache, im pragmatischen Gebrauch der Sprache und in der Moralitat eintreten wird. zitiert von 9

Abstract: This essay aims to discover and to illustrate one of the leading themes of Horace's first book of Epistles. This theme, good manners, despite its importance, is nonetheless neglected, or at any rate huddled up within the general praise of Horace's tact. Tact there certainly is, and we shall watch it in operation. But the poet would be setting aside that uerecundia which his patron praised (Epist. 1.7.37) if he were merely blowing his own trumpet. The display of tact and good manners perhaps serves other ends, and the suggestion of reasons for this choice of theme will form the substance of my remarks. Some preparation of the ground is necessary. This essay completes an argument begun in an article entitled ‘Horace's Epistles I and philosophy’ which will appear in the American Journal of Philology for 1985. In order that this essay may be fairly complete in itself it will be useful to set out very briefly the considerations which induced me to look more closely at good manners. To do this most compendiously, I shall offer some quotations from E. C. Wickham's English commentary on the first epistle and explain why they appear unsatisfactory. Wickham is not chosen as a whipping-boy for any other reason than that he neatly expresses a common view; in all respects he is a serious and helpful student of the poems.

Abstract: Outlines the basic principles of ethnomethodology, which is described as a special discipline of phenomenological sociology, and discusses its relationships with a Marxist theory of verbal communication. The article focuses on the following points: (1) the scientific-historical background of ethnomethodological sociology, (2) the view of society it reflects, (3) the object of its research, and (4) methodological positions in research on this topic. Ethnomethodology and the Marxist theory of verbal communication are delineated and several ways of how the two approaches can mutually benefit each other are discussed. zitiert von 10 Grundzuge der Ethnomethodologie als spezielle Richtung der phanomenologischen Soziologie werden dargestellt, wobei ihre Beziehungen zu und ihre Vereinbarkeit mit einer marxistischen Theorie der sprachlichen Kommunikation diskutiert werden. Abgeklart werden dabei (1) der wissenschaftshistorische Hintergrund der ethnomethodologischen Soziologie, (2) die hinter ihr stehende Gesellschaftsauffassung, (3) ihr Gegenstand sowie (4) methodologische und methodische Positionen in entsprechenden Forschungsprogrammen. Abstract: Der Vorhersagewert von Einstellung, Einstellungsverfügbarkeit und sozialen Normen für das Umweltschutzverhalten wird untersucht. 102 Studierende wurden zum Umgang mit Abfall in verschiedenen Situationen, zur Verfügbarkeit ("accessibility") solcher Einstellungen (Sicherheit des Einstellungsurteils, persönliche Bedeutsamkeit der Einstellung, Aktivität und Engagement in Sachen Umweltschutz) und zu Familien- und Freundesnormen befragt. Der Zusammenhang zwischen Einstellung und in Interviews berichtetem Verhalten betrug 0.49. Nur bei Personen mit hoher Einstellungsverfügbarkeit im Sinne von Aktivität beim Umweltschutz fiel er höher aus. Das Einstellungsmerkmal "Verfügbarkeit" beeinflusste überdies teilweise den Zusammenhang zwischen sozialen Normen und offenem Verhalten; bei geringer Einstellungsverfügbarkeit leisteten soziale Normen eine bessere Verhaltensvorhersage als Einstellungen.

Abstract: Die Möglichkeiten, Befragtenverzerrungen theoretisch zu erklären und empirisch nachzuweisen, sind - trotz vielversprechender Ansätze - bis jetzt vernachlässigt worden. Im Aufsatz werden zuerst die bisherigen Ansätze, Reaktionen im Befragungsprozeß zu erklären, diskutiert. Darauf aufbauend wird mit Hilfe der kognitiv-hedonistischen Verhaltenstheorie und der kognitiven Handlungstheorie ein theoretisches Modell entwickelt, das neben „wahren“ inhaltlichen Reaktionen (Kerntheorie) auch sozial erwünschtes Verhalten (Methodentheorie) berücksichtigt. Die empirische Überprüfung erfolgt sekundär analytisch anhand einer Studie von Schuessler (1982), die sowohl verzerrungsanfällige Items als auch Messungen zur sozialen Erwünschtheit enthält. Der Vergleich zweier LISREL-Modelle, jeweils mit und ohne Methodentheorie, verdeutlicht, daß erst durch Einführung einer Methodentheorie die Überschätzung der epistemischen Koeffizienten und der theoretischen Postulate korrigiert werden kann.
