(1987): Don't I know you?. Antecedents and social consequences of perceived familiarity. In: Journal of Experimental Social Psychology 23 (1), S. 75-92. DOI: 10.1016/0022-1031(87)90026-6
Abstract: The antecedents and consequences of the perceived familiarity, or resemblance, of a stranger to someone already known are explored in two studies. Study 1 showed that subjects in a discussion group who expected hostility to be directed toward them were more likely to perceive familiarity in group members compared to subjects in control conditions. In Study 2 male perceiver subjects had an 8-min phone conversation with female targets who did or did not resemble a close friend of the perceiver. Familiar targets were rated by both perceivers and naive judges to be more similar to the close friends in central trait descriptors. Results are discussed in terms of the social functions of perceived familiarity.

Hogrefe, S. 138-157

(1986): An Evolutionary Approach to Norms. In: American Political Science Review 80 (04), S. 1095-1111. DOI: 10.2307/1960858
Abstract: Norms provide a powerful mechanism for regulating conflict in groups, even when there are more than two people and no central authority. This paper investigates the emergence and stability of behavioral norms in the context of a game played by people of limited rationality. The dynamics of this new norms game are analyzed with a computer simulation based upon the evolutionary principle that strate- gies shown to be relatively effective will be used more in the future than less effective strategies. The results show the conditions under which norms can evolve and prove stable. One interesting possibility is the employment of metanorms, the willingness to punish someone who did not enforce a norm. Many historical examples of domestic and international norms are used to illustrate the wide variety of mechanisms that can support norms, including metanorms, dominance, internalization, deterrence, social proof, membership in groups, law, and reputation.

(1986): Interaktionsrituale.

(1986): Universals of linguistic politeness - Quantitative Evidence from Japanese and American English. In: Journal of Pragmatics 10 (3), S. 347-371. DOI: 10.1016/0378-2166(86)90006-8
Abstract: A cross-cultural study of requests for a pen in Japanese and in American English provides empirical evidence for a common factor, Discernment, which we hypothesize operates in all sociolinguistic systems of politeness. We also propose a complementary factor, Volition, hypothesizing that differences in the weighting of the two factors afford one way to characterize sociolinguistic systems of politeness in different languages. The results of the study further offer empirical support for the theories of Brown and Levinson and Leech.

(1986): The Effect of Verbal and Pictorial Advertising Stimuli on Aesthetic, Utilitarian and Familiarity Perceptions. In: Journal of Advertising 15 (2), S. 27-34. DOI: 10.1080/00913367.1986.10673002
Abstract: The study examined perceptions of advertising stimuli presented in an all-verbal or all-visual format. Three response criteria were investigated: utilitarian/rational perceptions, aesthetic/emotional perceptions and familiarity perceptions. Hypotheses that utilitarian/rational perceptions would be associated with all-verbal advertising stimuli and familiarity perceptions would be associated with all-visual advertising stimuli were supported. A third hypothesis that aesthetic/ emotional perceptions would be associated with all-visual advertising stimuli received mixed support.

(1986): Rules, reciprocity, and rewards. A developmental study of resource allocation in social interaction. In: Journal of Experimental Social Psychology 22 (5), S. 419-435. DOI: 10.1016/0022-1031(86)90043-0
Abstract: Most studies of children's fairness have been conducted in settings of minimal interdependence. However, understanding the development of fair behavior also requires exploration of the processes operating in settings of ongoing interaction. It was hypothesized that in such settings reciprocity would be an important determinant of children's reward allocations. Second and sixth grade boys and girls (N = 80) participated in a simulated interaction requiring them to take turns with a fictitious co-worker distributing earnings over a series of 10 trials. Co-worker's distributions were consistently selfish, generous, equitable, or equalitarian across trials. Results indicated, for both age groups, a strong influence of co-workers' prior distributions that increased across trials. For sixth graders, the modal distributions in each of the three experimental groups matched the co-workers'. They understood the rules of equity and equality and considered both fair. Neither selfishness nor generosity was considered fair, even as reciprocation of others' prior distribution. Second graders understood the equality norm although they tended to act selfishly and consider both equality and selfishness fair, despite having contributed less work than their co-workers. Generous and equitable co-workers influenced second graders' distributions away from selfishness but not enough to match the co-workers' distributions. Second graders considered neither equity nor generosity fair and displayed little understanding of the equity norm.

(1986): Convention. Oxford: Blackwell
Abstract: Convention was immediately recognized as a major contribution to the subject and its significance has remained undiminished since its first publication in 1969. Lewis analyzes social conventions as regularities in the resolution of recurring coordination problems-situations characterized by interdependent decision processes in which common interests are at stake. Conventions are contrasted with other kinds of regularity, and conventions governing systems of communication are given special attention.
