(2007): Audience effects on moralistic punishment☆. In: Evolution and Human Behavior 28 (2), S. 75-84. DOI: 10.1016/j.evolhumbehav.2006.06.001
Abstract: Punishment has been proposed as being central to two distinctively human phenomena: cooperation in groups and morality. Here we investigate moralistic punishment, a behavior designed to inflict costs on another individual in response to a perceived moral violation. There is currently no consensus on which evolutionary model best accounts for this phenomenon in humans. Models that turn on individuals' cultivating reputations as moralistic punishers clearly predict that psychological systems should be designed to increase punishment in response to information that one's decisions to punish will be known by others. We report two experiments in which we induce participants to commit moral violations and then present third parties with the opportunity to pay to punish wrongdoers. Varying conditions of anonymity, we find that the presence of an audience-even if only the experimenter-causes an increase in moralistic punishment.

(2007) : Emotion Interaction System for a Service Robot: RO-MAN 2007 - The 16th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication: RO-MAN 2007 - The 16th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication: Jeju, Korea: IEEE, S. 351-356
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ROMAN.2007.4415108 Abstract: This paper introduces an emotion interaction system for a service robot. The purpose of emotion interaction systems in service robots is to make people feel that the robot is not a mere machine, but reliable living assistant in the home. The emotion interaction system is composed of the emotion recognition, generation, and expression systems. A user's emotion is recognized by multi-modality, such as voice, dialogue, and touch. The robot's emotion is generated according to a psychological theory about emotion: OCC (Ortony, Clore, and Collins) model, which focuses on the user's emotional state and the information about environment and the robot itself. The generated emotion is expressed by facial expression, gesture, and the musical sound of the robot. Because the proposed system is composed of all the three components that are necessary for a full emotional interaction cycle, it can be implemented in the real robot system and be tested. Even though the multi- modality in emotion recognition and expression is still in its rudimentary stages, the proposed system is shown to be extremely useful in service robot applications. Furthermore, the proposed framework can be a cornerstone for the design of emotion interaction and generation systems for robots.

(2007): Negative Soziale Unterstützung bei der Bewältigung von Lebensbelastungen. In: Zeitschrift für Gesundheitspsychologie 15 (2), S. 43-56. DOI: 10.1026/0943-8149.15.2.43

(2007): Unconditional respect for persons: A social psychological analysis. In: Gruppe. Interaktion. Organisation. Zeitschrift für Angewandte Organisationspsychologie (GIO) 38 (4), S. 451-464. DOI: 10.1007/s11612-007-0037-0
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11612-007-0037-0 Abstract: It has been suggested that unconditional respect for persons, i.e. respect that is due to everyone simply as a function of their being persons, is the most fundamental kind of respect. Showing unconditional respect towards someone involves recognizing their integrity as a person and their status as an autonomous rational actor. This idea is a cornerstone of much moral, social and political theory. While the idea implicitly underlies some contemporary psychological work on respect, for the most part this fundamental moral orientation has been neglected in psychology. The concept needs clear explication and measurement if its explanatory and predictive value is to be fully realised. This paper will explore the concept of unconditional respect, describe a scale for measuring individual differences in this attitude, and then go on to position unconditional respect, both conceptually and empirically, amongst other relevant social psychological constructs such as Social Dominance Orientation, Right-Wing Authoritarianism, Empathy and Perspective-taking. We then provide some evidence on, as well as speculation about, the role of unconditional respect in interpersonal and intergroup relations.

(2007): Conceptualizations of respect: Qualitative and quantitative evidence of four (five) themes. In: The Journal of Psychology 141 (5), S. 469-484. DOI: 10.3200/JRLP.141.5.469-484
DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17933402 Abstract: Respect is a term used frequently in the vernacular and psychological literature. However, frequency of use has not yielded a coherent body of psychological research on the topic, perhaps because of its elusive and contextual nature. Examining the divergent literature on respect yields 4 general themes in how it is conceptualized: (a) social rules, (b) equality, (c) caring, and (d) social power. In this study, the author used qualitative and quantitative assessment to explore the soundness of these themes. The 4 themes emerged in each of the different methods, and there was evidence of convergence of the themes across methods. A 5th unexpected theme, personal attributes, was revealed in the qualitative measures. This study provides an empirical foundation for acknowledging the complexity and potential importance of respect. Understanding the thematic variability in how respect is conceptualized will improve research, theory, and application.

(2007) : wearIT(at)work - Towards Real Life Industrial Applications of Wearable Computing: 4th International Forum on Applied Wearable Computing 2007: Tel Aviv, Israel: IEEE, S. 1-12
Abstract: Wearable computing means a paradigm shift: instead of working at the computer users are supported by computing systems in their primary tasks. Currently wearable computing is still a technology of niches and in a laboratory stage. However, with wearIT@work a project dedicated to applications was launched by the European Commission (EC IP 004216). The first 30 months of this project are over and industrial demonstrators, evaluations and results are available. In this paper results of the second development cycle are presented. The influence of the strong end user involvement in the design process led to results in the four application domains of maintenance, production, healthcare and emergency response with a maturity beyond simple prototypes.

(2007): Politeness. Is there an East-West divide?. In: Journal of Politeness Research. Language, Behaviour, Culture 3 (2), S. 167-206. DOI: 10.1515/PR.2007.009
Abstract: Brown and Levinson (1987 [1978]) has remained the most seminal and influential starting point for studying cross-cultural and interlinguistic politeness. Yet it has also provoked countervailing arguments (e. g., Ide 1989; 1993; Matsumoto 1989; Gu 1990, Mao 1994), claiming a Western bias in Brown and Levinson's model, particularly in their construal of the concept of 'face', in their overemphasis on face-threat and their assumption of individualistic and egalitarian motivations, as opposed to the more group-centred hierarchy-based ethos of Eastern societies. This leads to the question: Is there an East-West divide in politeness? This article presents a pragmatic framework for studying linguistic politeness phenomena in communication: a common principle of politeness (Leech, 1983, 2005) and a Grand Strategy of Politeness (GSP), which is exemplified in common linguistic behaviour patterns in the performance of polite speech acts such as requests, offers, compliments, apologies, thanks, and responses to these. The GSP says simply: In order to be polite, a speaker communicates meanings which place (a) a high value on what relates to the other person (typically the addressee), and (b) a low value on what relates to the speaker It is clear from many observations that constraint (a) is more powerful than constraint (b). The following hypothesis will be put forward, and supported by evidence from four languages: that the GSP provides a very general explanation for communicative politeness phenomena in Eastern languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean, as well as in Western languages such as English. Since politeness deals with scalar phenomena, this is not to deny the importance of quantitative and qualitative differences in the settings of social parameters and linguistic parameters of politeness in such languages. A framework such as the GSP provides the parameters of variation within which such differences can be studied. Hence this article argues in favour of the conclusion that, despite manifest differences, there is no East-West divide in politeness.

(2007) : Transforming Inter-Organizational Business Processes into Service-Oriented Architectures Method and Application in the Automotive Industry In: VDE: Communication in Distributed Systems - 15. ITG/GI Symposium: Bern, Switzerland: IEEE, S. 1-12. Online verfügbar unter https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/5755467/
Abstract: Service-oriented architectures (SOA) promise flexible process integration in heterogeneous environments. Since services encapsulate application functionality according to business processes, the understanding of processes is a prerequisite for implementing an SOA. Existing SOA development approaches tend to focus on enterprise application integration scenarios rather than on business-to-business scenarios. Due to the increasing heterogeneity of applications in an inter-organizational context, significant benefits can be expected when implementing SOAs for business-to-business integration. However, a systematic approach to analyzing inter-organizational business processes and transforming them into SOAs is still missing. This paper presents a method for modeling inter-organizational processes and deriving business services in three steps. The applicability of this method is shown for a specific business-to-business scenario in the automotive industry.

(2007) : Soziale und politische Partizipation als Parameter gesunder Lebensstile : Ergebnisse zweier Bevölkerungssurveys In: Lengerke, Thomas von: Public Health-Psychologie: Individuum und Bevölkerung zwischen Verhältnissen und Verhalten: Weinheim; München: Juventa-Verl. (Grundlagentexte Gesundheitswissenschaften), S. 207-215

(2007) : A Comprehensive Human Factors Analysis of Wearable Computers Supporting a Hospital Ward Round: 4th International Forum on Applied Wearable Computing 2007: Tel Aviv, Israel: IEEE, S. 1-12
Abstract: This paper focuses on the social computing and usability issues connected to the use of a wearable computer as support of the clinical ward round. An evaluation of a prototype system was performed with a group of doctors and nurses, who physically tried out the system in a simulated ward round scenario and were interviewed about their experiences. Generally, the doctors and nurses felt such system would be helpful in diminishing paper work and enhance collaboration. The most critical component of the prototype system was the navigation in electronic patient documents using gesture interaction. The doctors found the gestures difficult to learn and were worried the patient contact would suffer as a result of too much attention being needed by the gestures.

(2007): What's bad is easy: Taboo values, affect, and cognition. In: Judgment and Decision Making 2 (3), S. 169-188
Abstract: Some decision situations are so objectionable or repugnant that people refuse to make a choice. This paper seeks to better understand taboo responses, and to distinguish choices that are truly taboo from those that are merely difficult or confusing. Using 22 scenarios that describe potentially taboo issues, Experiment 1 explores reasons for disapproval of the scenarios. We measure a large number of possible reasons for disapproval and a variety of preference responses (including willingness to accept), in order to test for subtleties in taboo responses. We also test cognitive and affective responses to the scenarios. Experiment 2 further explores the interaction, found in Experiment 1, between affective and cognitive factors. Taken as a whole, our results show that people are able to indicate their disapproval consistently across a variety of preference elicitation methods, that their disapproval is better understood as an attitude measure than as an economic valuation (even when the measure is in monetary terms), and that taboo responses are driven primarily by affect. (01.01.2007): Interdependenz in Paarbeziehungen: Vertraute Theorien - Neue Empirie.

(2007): Social Systems. In: Philosophical Psychology 20 (5), S. 557-578. DOI: 10.1080/09515080701545981
Abstract: It used to be thought that folk psychology is the only game in town. Focusing merely on what people do will not allow you to predict what they are likely to do next. For that, you must consider their beliefs, desires, intentions, etc. Recent evidence from developmental psychology and fMRI studies indicates that this conclusion was premature. We parse motion in an environment as behavior of a particular type, and behavior thus construed can feature in systematizations that we know. Building on the view that folk psychological knowledge is knowledge of theoretical models, I argue that social knowledge is best understood as lying on a continuum between behavioral and full-blown psychological models. Between the two extremes, we have what I call social models. Social models represent social structures in terms of their overall purpose and circumscribe individuals' roles within them. These models help us predict what others will do or plan what we should do without providing information about what agents think or want. Thinking about social knowledge this way gives us a more nuanced picture of what capacities are engaged in social planning and interaction, and gives us a better tool with which to think about the social knowledge of animals and young children.

(2007) : Ecological norm orientation and private car use In: Gärling, Tommy; Steg, Linda (Hg.): Threats from car traffic to the quality of urban life: Problems, causes, and solutions: Amsterdam; Oxford: Elsevier, S. 251-271
Abstract: Discusses the question of how far ecological motives generally exert an influence on everyday environmentally friendly behavior and presents theoretical models that explain the effect of an ecological norm orientation on behavior, suggesting an integrative norm activation model that focuses on personal norms and their relevance for car use. Topics discussed include (1) the impact of environmental concern and ecological norms as well as personal and social norms, (2) the reduction of individual car use, (3) a modified norm activation theory as an integrated model that addresses the progressive model stages of (a) attention phase, (b) motivation and evaluation phase, (c) denial (i.e., reassessment and redefinition of the situation), and (d) the blocking effects of car-use habits, and (4) an ecological norm orientation as a starting point to change car-use behavior, including building up personal ecological norms, strategies to activate and stabilize personal norms, and preconditions for the implementation of norm-focused strategies. The authors point out that a great demand not only for interventions but also for theory-driven intervention studies in the domain of individual car use exist, noting that the studies of individual car use concentrating on car-related behaviors other than the mode choice and the role of norms has mostly been neglected.

(2007): Language and theory of mind: meta-analysis of the relation between language ability and false-belief understanding. In: CHILD DEVELOPMENT 78 (2), S. 622-646. DOI: 10.1111/j.1467-8624.2007.01018.x
DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17381794 Abstract: Numerous studies show that children's language ability is related to false-belief understanding. However, there is considerable variation in the size of the correlation reported. Using data from 104 studies (N=8,891), this meta-analysis determines the strength of the relation in children under age 7 and examines moderators that may account for the variability across studies--including aspect of language ability assessed, type of false-belief task used, and direction of effect. The results indicate a moderate to large effect size overall that remains significant when age is controlled. Receptive vocabulary measures had weaker relations than measures of general language. Stronger effects were found from earlier language to later false belief than the reverse. Significant differences were not found among types of false-belief task.

(2007): A Dual Mechanism Neural Framework for Social Understanding. In: Philosophical Psychology 20 (1), S. 43-63. DOI: 10.1080/09515080601085864
Abstract: In this paper a theoretical framework is proposed for how the brain processes the information necessary for us to achieve the understanding of others that we experience in our social worlds. Our framework attempts to expand several previous approaches to more fully account for the various data on interpersonal understanding and to respond to theoretical critiques in this area. Specifically, we propose that social understanding must be achieved by at least two mechanisms in the brain that are capable of parallel information processing. The first mechanism, based on research into mirror matching systems in the brain, suggests that representations of others are mapped onto an observer's representations of these same schemas in order to understand them. The second mechanism requires semantic analysis of a given social situation in order to understand the actions of others and most likely involves conscious processes. We suggest that experimental correlates of these systems should be dissociable using both behavioral and neuroimaging techniques.
