Abstract: Tensions between modernism and postmodernism in psychoanalytic theory and practice are evident in the allegedly "postmodern" view of subjectivity as not unified but plural. Suggesting that a thoroughgoing postmodern clinical practice does not exist at present, I distinguish between U. S. and European models of the postmodern multiple subject and between modern and postmodern varieties of pluralism in the current psychoanalytic theorization of subjectivity in this country, proposing that all such pluralist theories are in fact mixed models. I argue that these theories do not reflect objective, essential traits of selfhood but are complexly shaped by the cultural presuppositions and intrapsychic needs of the analyst; hence attempts to theorize subjectivity with reference to science (including developmental schemas) are problematic, Because a thoroughgoing postmodern pluralism cannot accommodate such concepts as agency and authenticity or a coherent narrative of the treatment process, clinical psychoanalysis, at least at present, inevitably includes major elements of the modernist approach, in which subjectivity is seen as unified. At this time of paradigm shift between modernism and postmodernism, therefore, it is important that pluralists decenter from their theories and respect the continuing influence of modernism on psychoanalytic theory and practice.

  • Lynch, Richard A. (2008): The Alienating Mirror. Toward a Hegelian Critique of Lacan on Ego-Formation. In: Human Studies 31 (2), S. 209-221. DOI: 10.1007/s10746-008-9083-z

Abstract: This article brings out certain philosophical difficulties in Lacan's account of the mirror stage, the initial moment of the subject's development. For Lacan, the "original organization of the forms of the ego" is "precipitated" in an infant's self-recognition in a mirror image; this event is explicitly prior to any social interactions. A Hegelian objection to the Lacanian account argues that social interaction and recognition of others by infants are necessary prerequisites for infants' capacity to recognize themselves in a mirror image. Thus mutual recognition with another, rather than self-recognition in a mirror, is what makes possible subsequent ego-formation and self-consciousness. This intersubjective critique suggests that many of the psychoanalytic consequences that Lacan derives from the mirror stage (e.g., alienation, narcissism, and aggressivity) may need to be rethought.

  • Žižek, Slavoj (2008): Lacan. Eine Einführung. Dt. Erstausg.

Abstract: Psychoanalysis and the social sciences have had an influence on one another since their respective beginnings. Although their relationship is generally recognized on a theoretical level, questions of concrete research methods have not been widely discussed. This essay supports the thesis that hermeneutics-related methods of qualitative social research are similar in many ways to the psychoanalytic method. Acceptance of these methods within psychoanalytic clinics and research could contribute to clearer conceptualization of unconscious processes. In turn, the psychoanalytic method could provide answers to unsolved problems of qualitative social research by basing category forming on an understanding of biographical work, the basic forms and procedural structures of which are distinguished by biological and social factors. • Mancia, Mauro (2006): Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience. Milano: Springer

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/88-470-0550-7

Abstract: Recent scientific studies have brought significant advances in the understanding of basic mental functions such as memory, dreams, identification, repression, which constitute the basis of the psychoanalytical theory. This book focuses on the possibility of interactions between psychoanalysis and neuroscience: emotions and the right hemisphere, serotonin and depression. It is a unique tool for professionals and students in these fields, and for operators of allied disciplines, such as psychology and psychotherapy.

Abstract: Notes that, traditionally, narcissism is understood as being synonymous with self-love and egocentricity. Drive theory defines it as the libidinous cathexis of the self, a view which the author questions. Instead, he proposes an intersubjective definition. Narcissism originates in the mirror of the object. A narcissistic disorder is an unconscious 'battle for recognition' (Hegel). A model of the intersubjective genesis of self, inspired by W. D. Winnicott (1950-1971) elaborated by C. Bollas (1987) and T. H. Ogden (1989), forms the basis for this interdisciplinary approach, combining Freud's definition of narcissism as 'being loved,' developmental theory in infant research, G. H. Mead's symbolic and interactionalistic concept of adoption of perspective (1934) and the socio-philosophical theory of recognition (A. Honneth, 1994; J. Benjamin, 1948). The present author's central thesis is that only under the paradigm of intersubjectivity can the notorious contradictions of the psychoanalytic concept of narcissism be resolved.
