(2016): Principles, Virtues, or Detachment?. Some Appreciative Reflections on Karen Stohr’s On Manners. In: Dao 15 (2), S. 227-239. DOI: 10.1007/s11712-016-9489-7
Abstract: Karen Stohr’s book On Manners argues persuasively that rules of etiquette, though conventional, play an essential moral role, because they “serve as vehicles through which we express important moral values like respect and consideration for the needs, ideas, and opinions of others” (Stohr 2012: 3–4). Stohr frequently invokes Kantian concepts and principles in order to make her point. In Part 2 of this essay, I shall argue that the significance of etiquette is better understood using a virtue ethics framework, like that of Confucianism, rather than the language of Kantianism. Within the Chinese tradition, Daoists have frequently been critics of Confucian ritualism. Consequently, in Part 3, I shall consider some possible Daoist critiques of Stohr’s work.

Selten wird die Frage gestellt, welchen Status grammatische Regeln haben. Tatsächlich ist keineswegs klar, was als korrektes Deutsch gelten kann. Wie ist das Deutsche zu fassen? Wer bestimmt, was als korrekt gelten soll? Die 44. Jahrestagung des Instituts für Deutsche Sprache suchte zur Klärung solcher Probleme beizutragen und wählte als Thema die deutsche Grammatik im Spannungsfeld von Regel, Norm und Sprachgebrauch. Main description: Concern for the German language will always attract large audiences. Whoever claims that language is going to the dogs can be sure of the approbation of those who see themselves as linguistically superior. However, the status of grammatical rules is seldom questioned. It is in fact by no means clear what can be seen as correct German. How is ‘German’ to be understood? Who determines what should be regarded as correct? The 44th Annual Conference of the Institut für Deutsche Sprache [German Language Research Institute] endeavoured to help clarify questions such as these, and took as its topic German grammar in the tension between rules, standards and language usage. Abstract: Convention was immediately recognized as a major contribution to the subject and its significance has remained undiminished since its first publication in 1969. Lewis analyzes social conventions as regularities in the resolution of recurring coordination problems-situations characterized by interdependent decision processes in which common interests are at stake. Conventions are contrasted with other kinds of regularity, and conventions governing systems of communication are given special attention.

Abstract: Daß Sprache auf Konvention beruht, ist ein Gemeinplatz. Wörter können in jeder beliebigen Bedeutung verwendet werden; und wir, die wir sie verwenden, geben ihnen die Bedeutung, die sie gerade haben, weil wir irgendwie, allmählich und ohne festes Verfahren, erfaßt haben, in welcher Bedeutung wir sie verwenden werden. Wir könnten diese Wörter ebensogut anders gebrauchen — oder andere Wörter gebrauchen, wie die Menschen in fremden Ländern. Wir könnten unsere Konventionen ändern, wenn wir wollten.
