    Abstract: This paper reports results of a controlled evaluation study on the effectiveness of a social problem-solving training program. Thirtysix 4- to 6-year-old preschool children who took part in a 15-session training program were compared with 33 untreated controls. Social behavior was rated by parents (mother and father) and preschool teachers before and 3 months after training. Ratings by trainers on the on/off-task behavior of children during sessions indicated that the program implementation was sound. Furthermore, analyses confirmed small but consistently positive effects on the prosocial behavior of the children. Smaller effects were observed on behavior problem ratings, although trained children showed decreasing scores on antisocial behavior in maternal ratings. In sum, results replicated those from recent reviews and meta-analyses in the field, indicating that social skills training is more effective within risk groups. However, because the evaluated program was relatively unintensive, scored high in implementation, and had some positive effects on the prosocial behavior of preschool children, it can also be recommended as a promising universal prevention measure.
