DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/CogInfoCom.2017.8268261 Abstract: Human behavior is often guided by social and moral norms. Robots that enter human societies must therefore behave in norm-conforming ways as well to increase coordination, predictability, and safety in human-robot interactions. However, human norms are context-specific and laced with uncertainty, making the representation, learning, and communication of norms challenging. We provide a formal representation of norms using deontic logic, Dempster-Shafer Theory, and a machine learning algorithm that allows an artificial agent to learn norms under uncertainty from human data. We demonstrate a novel cognitive capability with which an agent can dynamically learn norms while being exposed to distinct contexts, recognizing the unique identity of each context and the norms that apply in it.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ROMAN.2014.6926389 Abstract: For service robots operating in indoor environments, the crucial task of navigation is often complicated by the presence of people. Simply treating humans in the environment as additional (often moving) obstacles can violate the complex set of social rules by which people navigate around each other. In contrast, emulating human behavior and navigating in a socially appropriate manner could positively affect people’s comfort with a robot’s presence and motion. We present a method of generating social paths for a robot to approach a person based on a small amount of human data. We also conducted a study in which a robot approached participants using both these social paths and straight-line, nonsocial paths. We found that both approaches were rated comparably when the robot approached from the participant’s front or side, but the social approach was significantly preferred when the robot came from behind the participant.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/IROS.2005.1545293 Abstract: When we talk about objects in an environment, we indicate to a listener which object is currently under consideration by using pointing gesture and such reference terms as "this" and "that". Such reference terms play an important role in human interaction by quickly informing the listener of an indicated object’s location. In this research, we propose a three-layered draw-attention model for humanoid robots with gestures and verbal cues. Our proposed three-layered model consists of three sub models: reference term model (RTM), limit distance model (LDM) and object property model (OPM). RTM decides an appropriate reference term using functions constructed by an analysis of human behavior. LDM decides whether to use the object’s property with a reference term. OPM decides the appropriate property for indicating the object by comparing object properties with each other. We developed an attention drawing system in a communication robot named "Robovie" based on the three layered model. We confirmed its effectiveness through the experiments.

Abstract: This work explores the psychological motives that shape the extent and nature of people's cooperative behaviour in groups. In so doing, the authors bring together two literatures: the study of rule-following behaviour and the study of helping behaviour. They argue that both types of cooperative behaviour are rooted in people's views about the justice of group procedures. Four components of procedures are shown largely to define people's views about their fairness. Finally, the authors argue that people focus on procedural fairness because they use information about the fairness of group procedures to understand both the status of the group and their status within the group. These status judgments are important to people because they shape their self definitions and feelings of self worth.
