(1996): Fair division. From cake-cutting to dispute resolution. First published.. Cambridge; New York, NY; Oakleigh, Melbourne, Australia: Cambridge University Press. Online verfügbar unter http://www.loc.gov/catdir/description/cam027/95016488.html
Abstract: Cutting a cake, dividing up the property in an estate, determining the borders in an international dispute - such problems of fair division are ubiquitous. Fair Division treats all these problems and many more through a rigorous analysis of a variety of procedures for allocating goods (or 'bads' like chores), or deciding who wins on what issues, when there are disputes. Starting with an analysis of the well-known cake-cutting procedure, 'I cut, you choose', the authors show how it has been adapted in a number of fields and then analyze fair-division procedures applicable to situations in which there are more than two parties, or there is more than one good to be divided. In particular they focus on procedures which provide 'envy-free' allocations, in which everybody thinks he or she has received the largest portion and hence does not envy anybody else. They also discuss the fairness of different auction and election procedures.

(1996): A Culture of Teaching: Early Modern Humanism in Theory and Practice. Ithaca: Cornell Univ. Press
DOI: https://doi.org/10.2307/369449 Abstract: This provocative account of humanist education in early modern England relates the history of humanism to debates about its current status. The humanism Rebecca W. Bushnell traces through sixteenth-century sources emerges as distinct from humanist doctrines espoused today. And yet, in the conflicts faced by early humanists, Bushnell identifies the origins of contemporary educational notions and practices, including approaches to discipline, gender and class differences, reading and interpretation, canon formation, and the transmission of tradition. Renaissance texts depicting the schoolroom reveal a pedagogy fraught with tensions - between freedom and mastery, flexibility and rigid control, a passion for variety and a fear of excess. Bushnell describes this oscillation between opposites through debates over corporal punishment, in which the schoolmaster appears either as all-powerful or as the insignificant servant of authority. In pedagogical manuals strongly reminiscent of gardening guides, the scholar was seen as both a pliant vine and a force of nature. Bushnell perceives a similar ambivalence in early humanist attitudes toward reading and the creation of a literary canon. Moving outside the classroom walls, she considers the contradictory politics of appeals to tradition and invention in early debates over imitating the classics. In each instance, she indicates how, at the end of the sixteenth century, this balance began to tilt toward authoritarianism, selectivity, and discrimination.

(1996): Towards an anatomy of impoliteness. In: Journal of Pragmatics 25 (3), S. 349-367. DOI: 10.1016/0378-2166(95)00014-3
Abstract: Politeness theories have focussed on how communicative strategies are employed to promote or maintain social harmony in interaction. On the other hand, little work has been done on communicative strategies with the opposite orientation, that of attacking one's interlocutor and causing disharmony. In this paper, I consider the notions of inherent and mock impoliteness, and discuss contextual factors associated with impoliteness. In particular, I attempt to build an impoliteness framework which is parallel but opposite to Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory of politeness. Finally, I demonstrate that in some contexts - specifically that of army training and literary drama - impoliteness behaviour is not a marginal activity, and that we need an appropriate descriptive framework in order to account for it.

Abstract: The increasing realization among behaviorists and psychologists is that many animals learn by observation as members of social systems. Such settings contribute to the formation of culture. This book combines the knowledge of two groups of scientists with different backgrounds to establish a working consensus for future research. The book is divided into two major sections, with contributions by a well-known, international, and interdisciplinary team which integrates these growing areas of inquiry

(1996): "Motto : bleibt natürlich!" : zur Vermittlung geschlechtsspezifischer Körpersprache in Anstandsbüchern. In: Schweizerisches Archiv für Volkskunde 92 (1), S. 63-78
Abstract: Der Titel «Motto: Bleibt natürlich!

(1996) : Self-monitoring and concern for social appropriateness in China and England. In: Pandey, Janak: Asian contributions to cross cultural psychology: [proceedings of the fourth Asian regional conference of the International Association for Cross Cultural Psychology, held Jan. 3 -7, 1992 in Kathmandu, Nepal]: New Delhi: Sage (Proceedings of the ... Asian regional conference of the International Association for Cross Cultural Psychology), S. 255-267
Abstract: purpose of this study is to determine if the patterns [of self-monitoring] obtained in Japan and the US extend to the collectivistic and individualistic cultures of China and England / the sample included 317 [university] students / a list of 62 self-monitoring items was presented in the 1st part of a questionnaire on 'self-conceptions' / also included in the questionnaire was H. C. Triandis et al's (1986) measure of separation from ingroups, a scale designed to assess idiocentrism–allocentrism (personality level equivalents of indivdiualism–collectivism, respectively) data suggest that the Chinese and English differed in their self-monitoring tendencies and their concern for social appropriateness / findings of the 2 studies combined suggest that members of individualistic and collectivistic cultures have different concerns when it comes to self-monitoring (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

(1996): Social Mechanisms. In: Acta Sociologica 39 (3), S. 281-308. DOI: 10.1177/000169939603900302
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1177/000169939603900302 Abstract: In this article it is argued that the search for 'social mechanisms' is of crucial importance for the development of sociological theory. With this concept - which is occasionally used in the sociological literature but has received little systematic attention - attention is called to an intermediary level of analysis in-between pure description and story- telling, on the one hand, and universal social laws, on the other. While the search for universal laws and grand theory has a great deal of appeal, we do not believe that this type of theorizing is likely to foster the development of a useful body of explanatory theory. Drawing on the heritage of Robert Merton and James Coleman, it is argued that the essential aim of sociological theorizing should be to develop fine-grained middle-range theories that clearly explicate the social mechanisms that produce observed relationships between explanans and explanandum. We provide a tentative typology of social mechanisms, and we illustrate our argument by showing that three well-known theories in sociology- the self-fulfilling prophecy (Robert Merton), network diffusion (James Coleman), and threshold-based behavior (Mark Granovetter) - all are founded upon the same social mechanism.

(1996): Gender, Interaction, and Delinquency. Testing a Theory of Differential Social Control. In: Social Psychology Quarterly 59 (1). DOI: 10.2307/2787118
DOI: https://doi.org/10.2307/2787118 Abstract: Develops an interactionist explanation of gender differences in the processes leading to juvenile delinquency. Drawing on principles of symbolic interactionism, a theoretical model is specified that generates predictions about similarities and differences across gender in the relationships between commitment to reference groups, role-taking, and delinquency. Hypotheses are tested using data from a national sample of 1,636 youths. An interactionist theory of delinquency is supported for both females and males. Findings also show gender differences in the role-taking process leading to delinquency. Findings suggest an important difference in the process by which group social controls are transformed into self- control in delinquent situations among girls as compared with boys. Abstract: Tested a model integrating 3 theoretical perspectives regarding how stereotypes influence person perception . The theories included evaluative extremity theories, assumed characteristics theory, and expectancy violation theory. Predictions were assessed by manipulating the ethnicity, personal appearance, and speech style of target job applicants. These applicants were rated by 109 judges (White undergraduates). Results show that: (1) Judges evaluated job applicants far more on the basis of their personal appearance and speech style than on the basis of their ethnicity; (2) the range of evaluations of African American applicants was larger than the range of evaluations of White applicants; and (3) overall, judges evaluated the African American applicants more favorably than the White applicants. Results strongly support the model integrating the 3 theories. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

(1996): Science and sanity. An introduction to non-Aristotelian systems and general semantics. Lakeville, Conn.: International Non-Aristotelian Library Pub. Co.
Abstract: Selections from Science and Sanity represents Alfred Korzybski's authorized abridgement of his magnum opus, Science and Sanity: An Introduction to Non-Aristotelian Systems and General Semantics. This second edition, published in response to the recent Korzybski revival, adds new introductory material and a revised index, providing an accessible introduction to Korzybski's arguments concerning the need for a non-Aristotelian approach to knowledge, thought, perception, and language, to coincide with our non-Newtonian physics and non-Euclidean geometries, to Korzybski's practical philosophy, applied psychology, pragmatics of human communication, and educational program. Selections from Science and Sanity serves as an excellent introduction to general semantics as a system intended to aid the individual's adjustment to reality, enhance intellectual and creative activities, and alleviate the many social ills that have plagued humanity throughout our history.
