    Abstract: Verbal and non-verbal behaviors that we use in order to effectively communicate with other people are vital for our success in our daily lives. Despite the importance of social skills, creating standardized methods for training them and supporting their training is challenging. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) may have a good potential to support social and emotional learning (SEL) through virtual social demonstration games. This paper presents initial work involving the design of a pedagogical scenario to facilitate teaching of socially appropriate and inappropriate behaviors when entering and standing in a small group of people, a common occurrence in collaborative social situations. This is achieved through the use of virtual characters and, initially, virtual reality (VR) environments for supporting situated learning in multiple contexts. We describe work done thus far on the demonstrator scenario and anticipated potentials, pitfalls and challenges involved in the approach.

    Abstract: One way of acquiring behavior is by genetic transmission, but this method is not always the most advantageous one. Social learning allows individuals to acquire new information and adapt to environmental changes. The most common behaviors that are learned socially involve food acquisition, subsistence activities, mate-choice, and predator avoidance, all of which have direct survival benefits; whereas other behaviors such as body care, communication signals, and tool-use techniques have less direct benefits and, in some cases, no apparent benefit at all. Cultural variants between populations reflect these socially transmitted behaviors, and differences between how each species learns socially reflect the many ways in which individuals learn from one another. These differences are found in the types of mechanisms involved in social learning, and have been the focus of much of the research on social learning and behavior transmission in animals.

    Abstract: Much research has investigated how children relate to norms taught to them by adult authorities. Very few studies have investigated norms that arise out of children’s own peer interactions. In two studies, we investigated how 5- and 7-year-old children teach, enforce, and understand rules that they either created themselves or were taught by an adult. Children (N = 240) were asked to either invent game rules on their own or were taught these exact same rules by an adult (yoked design). Children of both ages enforced and transmitted the rules in a normative way, regardless of whether they had invented them or were taught the rules by an adult, suggesting that they viewed even their own self-made rules as normatively binding. However, creating the rules led 5-year-old children to understand them as much more changeable as compared with adult-taught rules. Seven-year-olds, in contrast, regarded both kinds of rules as equally changeable, indeed allowing fewer changes to the ir self- created rules than 5-year-olds. While the process of creating rules seemed to enlighten preschoolers’ understanding of the conventionality of the rules, school-aged children regarded both self-created rules and adult-taught rules in a similar manner, suggesting a deeper understanding of rule normativity as arising from social agreement and commitment.     Abstract: Auf der Basis interdisziplinärer Studien und wissenschaftlicher Definitionen zur Empathie wird ihre Bedeutung für die Erziehungswissenschaft und die pädagogische Praxis herausgearbeitet. Ähnlichkeiten zwischen den Konzepten der Empathie und des pädagogischen Taktgefühls werden aufgezeigt. Auf die Bedeutung von Empathie in der Lehrer-Schüler Interaktion wird eingegangen und die Möglichkeiten des Trainings der Empathiefähigkeit im Rahmen der Lehrerausbildung werden diskutiert. Abschließend wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit Empathie als ein nicht-diskursives Wissen betrachtet werden kann.

    Abstract: The focus of computerised learning has shifted from content delivery towards personalised online learning with Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS). Oscar Conversational ITS (CITS) is a sophisticated ITS that uses a natural language interface to enable learners to construct their own knowledge through discussion. Oscar CITS aims to mimic a human tutor by dynamically detecting and adapting to an individual's learning styles whilst directing the conversational tutorial. Oscar CITS is currently live and being successfully used to support learning by university students. The major contribution of this paper is the development of the novel Oscar CITS adaptation algorithm and its application to the Felder–Silverman learning styles model. The generic Oscar CITS adaptation algorithm uniquely combines the strength of an individual's learning style preference with the available adaptive tutoring material for each tutorial question to decide the best fitting adaptation. A case study is described, where Oscar CITS is implemented to deliver an adaptive SQL tutorial. Two experiments are reported which empirically test the Oscar CITS adaptation algorithm with students in a real teaching/learning environment. The results show that learners experiencing a conversational tutorial personalised to their learning styles performed significantly better during the tutorial than those with an unmatched tutorial.

    Abstract: Academic integrity has received a great deal of attention as institutions of higher education look for ways to deal effectively with dishonest behaviors, including cheating and plagiarism, which some believe is the most critical issue facing academia today (Davis, Drinan, & Gallant, 2009). Given the prevalence of the problem, Davis and colleagues (2009) challenged educational institutions to determine ways to prevent cheating and suggested cultivating a culture in which academic dishonesty is clearly unacceptable. An honor system has been shown to effectively reduce dishonest behaviors such as cheating (e.g., McCabe & Treviño, 1993). There is a growing trend of revitalizing honor systems (e.g., Melgoza & Smith, 2008) or introducing new modified honor systems (e.g., McCabe & Pavela, 2000). Although there is a long history of honor codes at many institutions of higher learning, most researchers have focused on how an honor code affects the attitudes and behaviors of studen ts rathe r than on pedagogy. In this chapter, we provide a brief history of honor systems in higher education, explain how an honor code influences academic dishonesty, examine how an honor system can impact pedagogy, and offer practical advice for implementing an honor code in a classroom.     Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of social intelligence on effective music teaching. Forty teachers from 'exemplary programs' and 'more challenging programs' across band, chorus, orchestra, and general public school music programs were administered the Interpersonal Perception Task—15 (IPT-15). In addition, 84 external evaluators viewed teaching excerpts of 12 'exemplary' and 'challenged' teachers and rated the (a) overall effectiveness and (b) main attribute that influenced their evaluations of each teaching excerpt. Results indicated no significant differences between the IPT-15 scores of 'exemplary' teachers and 'challenged' teachers. The external evaluators rated teachers identified as 'exemplary' significantly higher than they rated teachers labeled as 'challenged.' The majority of attributes influencing external evaluators’ ratings of overall teacher effectiveness were social, constituting more than 85% of all responses. All teachers who demonstrated effective social skills were perceived as effective teachers. Effective communication skills were the most frequently cited attributes for 'exemplary' teachers, whereas ineffective classroom management was the most listed attribute for why teachers were rated ineffective.     Abstract: This keynote talk will illustrate a basic set of skills of emotional intelligence, how they are important for robots and agents that interact with people, and how our research at MIT addresses part of the problem of giving robots such skills. One of the most important skills is the ability to perceive and understand expressions of emotion, which I will highlight by demonstrating new technologies developed to read joint facial-head movements in real-time and associate these with complex affective-cognitive states, and technologies to read paralinguistic vocal cues from speech. I will also show some non-traditional ways robots might sense and learn about human emotion, and ways they can respond to what they sense that can help or hurt people. I will discuss social and ethical issues these technologies raise. Finally, I will present some new possibilities for robots to both learn from people and help teach skills of emotional intelligence to people, especially to those with nonverbal learning impairments who often want to learn these skills, including many people with diagnoses of autism spectrum disorders such as Aspergers Syndrome.

    Abstract: In this chapter, we do not attempt to reiterate the well-established literature on classroom structure. Instead, we introduce four proactive strategies teachers can implement during academic instruction to facilitate appropriate decorum and help a classroom run smoothly. Each strategy is an antecedent-based approach to preventing problems from occurring. Whereas consequent-based interventions require the problem behavior to occur before invoking the strategy (e.g., verbal redirect, time-out), antecedent-based approaches can be introduced without waiting for the problems to occur. The most common strategies include (a) proximity, (b) high rates of opportunities to respond, (c) high-probability requests (behavioral momentum), and (d) choice making. In the sections that follow, we define each of these strategies and document the effects of these interventions when used with students with or at risk for learning and behavior problems. While research has focused mostly on elementary school students, these techniques, with some possible modifications, should be appropriate for all grade levels and students in regular and special education classes. Finally, we conclude with a brief summary and discussion of the educational implications associated with employing antecedent-based, teacher-focused strategies for preventing problems from occurring.     Abstract: The Incredible Years parent and classroom interventions were evaluated for the first time in elementary schools. Culturally diverse, socioeconomically disadvantaged schools were randomly assigned to intervention or control (CON). In intervention schools, all children received a 2-year classroom intervention beginning in kindergarten. In addition, indicated children were randomly assigned to also receive parent training (PT + CR) or only the classroom intervention (CR). PT + CR mothers reported that, following intervention, children showed fewer externalizing problems and more emotion regulation than CR or CON children. Observations showed that child-mother bonding was stronger in the PT + CR condition than in the CON condition, and PT + CR mothers were significantly more supportive and less critical than CR or CON mothers. Teachers reported that PT + CR mothers were significantly more involved in school and that children in the PT + CR and the CR conditions had significantly fewer externalizing problems than in the CON condition.

    Abstract: This paper promotes socially intelligent animated agents for the pedagogical task of English conversation training for native speakers of Japanese. Since student-agent conversations are realized as role-playing interactions, strong requirements are imposed on the agents' affective and social abilities. As a novel feature, social role awareness is introduced to animated conversational agents, that are by now strong affective reasoners, but otherwise often lack the social competence observed in humans. In particular, humans may easily adjust their behavior depending on their respective role in a social setting, whereas their synthetic pendants tend to be driven mostly by emotions and personality. Our main contribution is the incorporation of a "social filter program" to mental models of animated agents. This program may qualify an agent's expression of its emotional state by the social context, thereby enhancing the agent's believability as a conversational partner. Our implemented system is web-based and demonstrates socially aware animated agents in a virtual coffee shop environment. An experiment with our conversation system shows that users consider socially aware agents as more natural than agents that violate conventional practices.
